Jessica Metcalf, professor in the CSU Department of Animal Sciences, was featured today in The New York Times for her New World screwworm research. Metcalf's project was recently selected for one of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grand Challenge Awards aimed at eradicating the New World screwworm fly.

Scientists are monitoring the pest's spread using swormlures, which attract flies to sticky paper with an odor that mimics decomposing flesh. However, unlike other flies that feed on rotting flesh, the New World screwworm feeds on and lays its eggs in living tissue, making the effectiveness of the swormlures uncertain.

CSU Ag Water Quality has concluded a three year study that was conducted in the Yampa, Gunnison and Colorado River basins. This study found that irrigated mountain hayfields work like large filters, removing sediment, fertilizer, excess nitrogen and phosphorus, and other pollutants from runoff.

This mountain meadow hay study has led to a new Colorado Water Plan project in the Yampa River Basin. The new project will demonstrate and evaluate best management practices in mountain meadow hay systems, building on this producer-driven research. Erik Wardle, the program’s director, explained, “These irrigated ag lands in the mountains are essentially large grass filter strips.”

The CSU Flower Trial Gardens are a must-see in Fort Collins during the summer. Not only are they beautiful and great for a walk, but they also test hundreds of annuals and perennials each year for plant companies from around the world 🌸🌼

The garden gets its funding from entry fees paid by companies testing their plants, as well as from sponsors in the green industry. These sponsors include horticulture associations, foundations, nurseries, garden centers, and greenhouse suppliers from across the country.

On August 4, during Colorado Destination Days, growers, suppliers, breeders, and other green industry professionals from around the world visited to see the plants in person. In this video, we hear from companies like Darwin Perennials, Dümmen Orange, North America, Beekenkamp Plants, and PanAmerican Seed about what the Trial Gardens mean to them and which plant traits they’re looking for.

The Colorado Agricultural College was established in 1870, 6 years before Colorado became the 38th state in the Union. Happy 150, Colorado!
