We focus on social justice, equity and equality, anti-oppression, and enhancing health and well-being

In 1968 the Colorado Department of Social Services and CSU entered an agreement to create a full baccalaureate social work major that would be housed in the Department of Sociology, delivered by a faculty of professional social workers, and funded with Title XX funds supporting 75% of the program costs. The agreement anticipated that the cost of operating the program would gradually shift to the university, and by 1977 it would be fully funded by CSU. A total of 150 students initially declared the social work major, and the first graduating class received the BA in social work in 1971. Social work encompasses empowering and advocacy activities directed toward individuals, families, groups, organizations, social institutions, and communities for enhancement or restoration of their capacity for social functioning and for creating societal conditions favorable to that goal. Utilizing theories of human behavior and social systems, social work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments, seeks to promote human decency, personal dignity and respect for human rights, social justice, social and cultural tolerance and global peace.

Big thank you to Colorado State Representative Rebekah Stewart!
Stewart attended the MSW policy course to discuss how her work as a music therapy clinician inspired her to get involved in policy. Students learned about getting involved in policy and systems change work, as well as what to offer policymakers and the processes involved in advocacy.

The connection didn't stop there! MSW distance student Angela Furney met with Representative Stewart to further discuss policy around affordable housing and human trafficking.

Grateful for our community of Rams and community of Coloradans working for positive policy change!

Get to know Maianna in this Q&A 👇

Q: What does Social Work mean to you?
A: To me, social work means becoming an advocate and a voice for what is right. Not only are you going into a profession where individuals will count on you to advocate for them, but you also get to build amazing connections, understand how to work with people, and how to care for individuals.

Q: What communities do you hope to impact through your degree and what impacts do you hope to have?
A: I hope to impact the youth communities; I hope to become an advocate and a voice when the youth feel they cannot be one.

Q: What do you love most about studying social work at CSU?
A: One of my favorite things I love when studying social work is the life skills you learn. I also love the self-care tips that social work programs equip us with; burnout is very prevalent issue when working in this profession, and it is so important to prioritize yourself!

Q: Why should someone study social work at CSU?
A: Anyone can study social work at CSU, even if it is not their primary major; we offer a minor. I also think it teaches such amazing skills to have when working with individuals.

Interested in a career that makes a difference? The Master of Addiction Counseling in Psychology and Social Work (MACPSW) joint degree program might be for you!

Sarah Arrowood, a current student in the program shares why this degree is so meaningful for her: "My passion derives from lived experience. I was raised by my grandparents while my parents navigated addiction and the criminal justice system. It was the compassionate, nonjudgemental professionals who stepped in to help me succeed that changed the trajectory of my life. I joined this program to give back what was so freely given to me, helping others build lives truly worth living."

He is the recipient of the 2025 Morris Price Jr. Outstanding Alumni Award!

After losing his brother to su***de, Colorado State alumnus Tumbleson made a quiet promise internally: no one should have to navigate life alone, ever. Today, whether it’s through counseling, community organizing or creating spaces where people feel seen, he’s spent years turning that promise into action.
