2026 marks 40 years of C.A.N.S. Around The Oval 🥫

Founded in 1986, C.A.N.S. – which stands for cash and nutritious staples – was one of the first major campus food drives in the state and has grown into a community tradition, annually connecting thousands of Rams and local partners to collect nonperishable food and raise money for the Food Bank for Larimer County and Rams Against Hunger Food Pantry. Today, it is one of the largest food and fund drives in Northern Colorado and one of the largest campus efforts of its kind in the state.

Dear CSU community,

Yesterday evening, many of you received an emergency alert or saw media coverage about an incident on campus. We’re writing to share what we can, thank those who responded, and make sure everyone is aware of the support available.

Here is what we know. On Monday evening, CSU Police received a report of a person acting erratically near Newton Plaza. When an officer arrived, a man armed with a handgun advanced toward the officer, and the man was shot. He was taken to an area hospital where he is being treated. No one else was injured. CSUPD determined there was no ongoing threat to campus and it was not an active shooter incident. The Critical Incident Response Team, led by Fort Collins Police Services, is investigating, and any further information will come from FCPS. A fuller summary is available at safety.colostate.edu.

We’re deeply grateful to CSUPD, FCPS and our other law enforcement and first responder partners for their swift response, and for the care and professionalism they showed in a difficult situation.

Yesterday’s alert and all clear messages each went to more than 48,000 email addresses and text numbers belonging to members of our campus community. We recognize that some people did not receive the text alerts. We are currently working to understand why that happened and to fix the issue going forward. Campus digital screens are utilized for situations with an ongoing threat, which CSUPD determined was not the case here.

Separately, some of you may have seen reports of a student arrest in a residence hall yesterday. That matter is unrelated to the incident near Newton Plaza.

The veterinary vibes are immaculate in the new Veterinary Hospital Education Complex ✨

Today, we’re announcing a $5 million gift from Bohemian Foundation that will advance CSU’s leadership in energy research and permanently fund student programs focused on democracy and the arts.

“This gift advances our capacity for groundbreaking energy innovation, and it also ensures that two of our most distinctive student initiatives will continue to provide generations of young people with opportunities to lead, create and contribute.” — President Amy Parsons

$3.8 million will increase capacity at CSU’s Powerhouse Energy Campus, a global hub for advanced and low-carbon energy solutions, industry collaboration and entrepreneurial scaleup. The investment will help expand the Powerhouse footprint and meet growing demand for research in grid resilience, wildfire, advanced fusion, nuclear technologies and energy access. It will also support more engineering capstone projects, student entrepreneurship and a fabrication academy open to students in every major.

$1.2 million will endow the Colorado Democracy Prize and the President's Art Prize, both launched last year. The Colorado Democracy Prize funds workshops, seed grants, mentorship and an annual award for student-led civic projects. The Art Prize is a juried award for artwork by CSU students and recent alumni from all disciplines, with students leading the selection and curation. The prizes build on years of CSU leadership focused on student success, strengthening democracy, civic engagement, public dialogue and creative expression.

Thank you to Bohemian Foundation for decades of investment in innovative ideas, student opportunities and programs that strengthen communities across Colorado and around the world. This extraordinary gift supports our broader institutional expertise and advances priorities that have shaped CSU’s work for years.

A new era for veterinary care and education at CSU 💚💛

Last week, we celebrated the grand opening of our new Veterinary Hospital and Education Complex (VHEC), where veterinary care and education come together in a big way.

Here’s what’s new:
🐾 Expanded small animal veterinary hospital with modern clinical spaces and services
🐄 New livestock hospital with design input from Temple Grandin
🏥 Lobby areas designed to create a more welcoming experience for animals and their people
🎓 Classrooms and labs supporting CSU’s new DVM curriculum for the next generation of veterinarians
