It’s time to meet our 2026 Fat Squirrel lineup!

And for the first time in Fat Squirrel Week history, we have two Ground Squirrel contenders. Not to be confused with chipmunks, these extra round ground dwellers are ready to shake things up – literally.

🥜 Plumpkin | Coming at you at approximately 0.3 mph. The ground shakes anyway.

🥜 Vacuum | 99% fluff, 1% self-control. Has been preparing for Fat Squirrel Week since birth.

🥜 Lil Nas X | There’s actually nothing “lil” about this guy. Don’t ask questions.

🥜 Stripes McGee | Golden-mantled ground squirrel who will dismantle snacks in approximately 2 seconds.

🥜 Honey Nut Cheerio | No neck. No regrets. Currently eating acorns and accepting compliments.

🥜 Baja Blast | Built like a beanbag. Has never once considered portion control.

🥜 Sandy Cheeks | Shaped like a baked potato. Would break a tree if she climbed trees (she is a ground squirrel).

🥜 Horchata | Local legend. Hasn’t moved from this branch since Tuesday and sees no reason to.

Fat Squirrel Week is officially here, and it’s time to meet our 8 fattest contestants hailing from CSU Main Campus and CSU Mountain Campus 🐿️ 🐿️ 🐿️ 🐿️ 🐿️ 🐿️ 🐿️ 🐿️

There’s just one final thing we need your help with – these well-fed squirrels need some names 👀 head to our Stories and drop some squirrel-inspired names ASAP!

Welcome to the world, Conservation and Environmental Leadership major!!!

This major is all about finding solutions to complex environmental challenges by understanding the connections between people, communities, and nature.

Housed in the Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources here in Warner College, this brand new major has two concentrations to choose from: Conservation and Society + Sustainable Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Management.

And as part of this major, students will earn 9 required credits by pursuing hands-on opportunities, including:
🌻 Earning a Wilderness Leadership Certification
🌻 Learning at CSU Mountain Campus
🌻 Building experience through an internship
🌻 Studying abroad
🌻 Conducting research

This World Rivers Day, we have lots to celebrate 🎉

After a 40 year absence, the Common Shiner – a rare Colorado native fish – is now swimming in the Poudre River.

Over the summer, the Larval Fish Lab collaborated with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to release 4,000 individuals across the Poudre River. LFL Director Kevin Bestgen and Ph.D. student Ryan Friebertshauser directly contributed to this effort.

"Reintroduction of Common Shiner is an effort towards restoring diversity," Ryan explained, "and by monitoring their survival and movement, reintroduced individuals offer an opportunity to learn more about how native fishes function and persist in the increasingly human-modified Poudre River ecosystem."

Luxilus cornutus was able to be reintroduced after populations of their non-native predator – the Brown Trout – diminished as a result of the Cameron Peak fires spreading ash and debris in our waterways.

So the next time you head to the Poudre, see if you can spot the Common Shiner thriving in its natural habitat.
