Welcome to a month in a life of NR453: Geospatial Field Methods for Natural Resources!

This past summer, Instructor Elizabeth Tulanowski led her class through a series of mapping and GPS lessons around campus, in classrooms, at CSU Mountain Campus, and in the field.

Students practiced their data collection techniques and mapping skills through practical real-world exercises, and they got some lessons in drone technology.

Student Spotlight | Meet Lydia Whipple!

Lydia is a third-year majoring in Geology and concentrating in geophysics, and she just got back from a GEO-packed summer!

Working as a geology/geophysics intern for Terracon Consultants, Lydia's primary responsibilities during this internship were to log soils and rock samples, classify materials, and record groundwater observations.

"Along with my internship, I had the opportunity to conduct geophysical field research in Wyoming in partnership with the University of Wyoming. Working in the Wind River Range and South Pass, I helped gather gravity and magnetic susceptibility data that is used in determining subsurface geology," she explained.

And if that wasn't enough, Lydia also worked as a volunteer for the USGS assisting in projects to map critical minerals in North America.

Welcome, first-year Warner Rams!

We are so glad you’re here, and we can’t wait to get to know you throughout your college career here at Warner College of Natural Resources 🐏

As you get settled in, here are some tips to navigate your first semester at CSU:

💚Join a club! Come to the Fall Picnic in Sherwood Forest on September 3, 4-6 p.m., and meet lots of great WCNR Student Organizations!

💚 Introduce yourself to your professors and teaching assistants – they’re part of our Warner
community and want to help you succeed, so take time to connect with them.

💚Attend a Warner event – we have lots of upcoming seminars where you can get to know Warner people outside of your major (more info coming soon).

💚Check out the Outdoor Program at the Rec Center to explore beautiful Colorado and meet cool outdoorsy people across CSU.

💚Wash your hands, take care of your physical and mental health, and go to the CSU Health Network when you need to!

💚Stop by the Student Success Center (MSNR 137) for directions, help finding rooms, and general info about Warner College. You can also pick up your Warner swag here if you missed Ram Welcome!

One last hang. 🌲🧡

It’s the final episode of Hammock Hang, and we’re wrapping up the series with one last conversation under the trees.

We’re closing out the series with Sydney Jackson-Clockston, Warner’s new Career Education Coordinator, chatting about everything from travel adventures and live music to career journeys and supporting students at Warner.

Thanks for hanging with us over the years. We hope you’ve enjoyed every episode as much as we have!💚

Earlier this month, the Warner College Career Team had the opportunity to visit the brand new Colorado State Forest Service tree nursery!

The nursery has new state-of-the-art equipment – including cold rooms for seed saving, a seed-sorting machine, and irrigation systems – that will help CSFS grow 1 to 2 million container seedlings a year.

Blue Spruce, Ponderosa Pine, other native species, and fruit trees will be grown here to aid in reforesting the state of Colorado, primarily in areas affected by wildfire.

What made this tour even more special was that this tour was led by two Warner College alumni: Orion Aon and Lily Perez. Plus the temperature controlled nursery offered a nice cool reprieve from the heat of the day!

For WCNR alums Alexandria Pineda and Ellie Lutz, environmental leadership starts with expanding access to nature and education.

Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology students Alex and Ellie graduated in May and then traveled to D.C. this month to join the 2026-2027 cohort of the Rachel Carson Council National Environmental Leadership Fellowship Program. They were welcomed by Colorado State University - Ecosystem Science and Sustainability alum Diego Tovar, who is the director of campus and civic engagement at the Rachel Carson Council.

Alex and Ellie have been busy meeting with environmental leaders and public officials, and attending workshops focused on leadership, writing and advocacy.

And they've also started working on their fellowship projects, which they will have the full year to develop:

🌳 Alex's project will connect middle and high school students with college students, giving students who may face financial or cultural barriers a chance to learn in the outdoors.

📚 Ellie's project will support and expand the Poudre Library District's environmental programming to welcome communities served by the library.

Alumni Spotlights | Meet Orion Aon and Lily Perez!

Orion and Lily work at the Colorado State Forest Service, where they are overseeing the operations of the brand new tree nursery!

Day-to-day tasks include things like:
🌱 seeding
🌱 irrigation
🌱 maintenance
🌱 harvesting
🌱 packing
🌱 distribution

Orion graduated in 2012 with a degree in Natural Resources Management, and in addition to working at the nursery, he runs his own foraging education business. He has written his first book, "Foraging Colorado," which will be released in May 2027!

Lily graduated in 2026 with a degree in Forest and Rangeland Stewardship. As a Warner student, Lily served as president of the Minoritized Genders in Natural Resources student organization and was an active member of the CSU SAF Alpha Chapter.

Orion's tip for current and future Warner students: Follow what interests you, volunteer, apply for internships, and make connections with other professionals in the industry. Having a network is the best way to find and grow in your career in natural resources.

Congrats to Warner College Fulbright Scholars Jeremy Rugenstein and Camille Stevens-Rumann!

Jeremy, an associate professor in the Geosciences Department, and Camille, an associate professor in the Forest and Rangeland Stewardship Department, are two of three CSU faculty selected to join the 2026-2027 cohort.

🪨 Jeremy will be heading to Germany to join a research group studying how processes such as erosion, landslides and river dynamics influence the movement of carbon through the Earth system.

“I hope this experience not only advances my research but also creates new opportunities for CSU students and researchers to connect with colleagues in Germany and across Europe,” said Jeremy.

🔥 Camille is off to Spain where she will work at an environmental research institute to study post-fire recovery and climate adaptation in wildfire-affected landscapes.

“I’m excited to work closely with researchers in Spain, learn from their experiences with wildfire and climate adaptation and gain a deeper understanding of the management questions they are facing,” said Camille.
