Did you know fire can create its own weather?
Meet Kyle Hilburn, a research scientist at the Cooperative Institute for research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University. Hilburn explains that when a spark ignites, it produces heat that rises, allowing air to rush in and create a new wind pattern. If the atmosphere is unstable, then the upward motion of the heat can create a cloud which leads to downdraft, spreading the fires in unpredictable directions.

Meet Chris Torres, one of our common first-year faculty members. He specializes in chemical engineering and is ready to dive into all things engineering with the first-year students! This fall, Dr. T will be teaching Engineering 111, Intro to Engineering, and in the spring, Engineering Grand Challenges. Join him this fall at the college's annual Soggy Sailors boat racing competition. He is looking forward to meeting you all this year!
