New research from PhD student Bryan Breidenbach and faculty Dr. Jamie Dahl and Dr. Sarah Walker examines what drives voter support for affordable housing in tourism-dependent communities.

Colorado’s cost-of-living crisis has hit resort and tourism-dependent counties especially hard. This article, published in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, digs into what actually predicts voter support for affordable housing policy in these places, using the 2022 statewide ballot measure Proposition 123 as a case study.

Colorado State University is just about an hour from one of the nation’s most iconic landscapes: Rocky Mountain National Park.

Along with the School of Social Sciences at - HDNR hosted another successful Pathways: Human Dimensions of Wildlife Conference in Oxford, England, from June 14 to June 17, 2026 with the theme, Wildlife and Human Wellbeing. 229 attendees gathered over the four-day event to explore critical issues in wildlife and human well-being, 17.2% of whom were practitioners, 62.1% academics/researchers, and 20.7% students. The conference featured two pre-conference training workshops, four plenary speakers, 20 organized sessions/workshops, 87 individual research presentations, and 28 poster presentations.
 
The majority of attendees (81.1%) rated the conference a 4 or 5 out of 5, specifically highlighting the research content and networking opportunities. One of the attendees remarked, “It was a pleasure to participate, and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to attend and learn from the sessions!”

From a small gathering inspired by the Women’s Forest Congress to a thriving, student-led tradition at Colorado State University 🌿💚

The Minoritized Genders’ Natural Resources Congress continues to grow, creating space for students and professionals to connect, build community, and have meaningful conversations about belonging in natural resources.

This year, we welcomed 70+ attendees, heard from inspiring speakers, and connected students with more than 20 incredible organizations. None of this would have been possible without our amazing partners, volunteers, speakers, and everyone who helped bring this event to life. Thank you for making this community stronger every year!

We’re excited to see what comes next. 🌱

Congratulations to HDNR MS student Carlene Myvett, one of 22 participants selected from across the seven UN sociocultural regions for the inaugural Geneva-based cohort of the International Institute for Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Policy!

Over two weeks, Carlene engaged directly with the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), learning from renowned speakers, connecting with Indigenous leaders and advocates from around the world, and co-creating an intervention shared at EMRIP’s 19th Session.

🎓 Congratulations, Dr. Kaiya Tamlyn!

It’s with so much pride that we celebrate Kaiya, who recently completed her PhD in HDNR. As founding President of our Graduate Student Organization and creator of “Lunch Club,” Kaiya built community from the ground up, helping students, faculty, and staff connect over shared meals and purpose. As our student representative on the Graduate Committee, she brought thoughtful, grounded input to every conversation.

Her dissertation, Nature, Connectedness, & Collaboration: Pathways Toward Collective Well-being, explored how connecting with nature and collaborating across disciplines can drive positive outcomes for people and the planet.

Next up: Kaiya continues her work with the Collective for Nature Immersion Science and Practice, only now at the University of Vermont, leading research on the health and well-being benefits of time in nature, and helping build bridges between researchers and practitioners in the field.

Thank you for everything you brought to HDNR, Kaiya. We can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes you! 🌿

🌴 From the classroom to the Caribbean! HDNR’s Stuart Cottrell just wrapped up a study abroad course in The Bahamas (May 16-23), capping off his sabbatical with a trip that brought together 15 CSU students from 8 different majors — including a special addition this year: Bahamian CSU student Ricardo Simmons Jr., who joined to share his local perspective and bring an authentic cultural lens to the experience.

Students explored the islands by boat, connected with a local K-12 school, and participated in a CSU recruiting event in Nassau, where they shared their CSU experiences with prospective Bahamian students. 🐏
