Art of War Scholars Program

Art of War Scholars Program A venue for Art of War (AoW) Scholars connectivity, both with the program and former AoW graduates, and a vehicle to inform prospective AoW scholars.

The Art of War (AoW) Scholars Program provides an immersive environment to examine the art of warfighting with the ultimate goal of scholars developing their own theory of war. The AoW scholars program provides an alternative to AOC for selected scholars within the CGSOC ILE curriculum at Fort Leavenworth.

The 2025 Scholar cohort had an opportunity to learn from Dr. Beth Bailey, Kansas University's Director of the Center for Military, War, and Society Studies on the subject of American mobilization and preparedness for war prior to WW2.

In 1935, prior to WW2, the US Military found itself with a military population of fewer than 120,000 uniformed service personnel, growing to nearly 8 million by the time of the Normandy landings. To make this possible, major commitments to American manufacturing, infrastructure, and human resource development were required.

Could we achieve the same massive effort today?

Congratulations and thank you to Doctor Dean and Jan Nowowiejski on 50 years of service to the Army! Please thank them in the comments for the amazing impact they have left on multiple generations of scholars, leaders, and Soldiers. The Art of War Scholars program is in good hands with Dr. Broaddus even as we'll miss the Nowowiejski family!

MAJ Jeff Nielsen is an infantry officer and SAMS student who wrote his MMAS on climate change strategic competition. "My favorite peer learning point came from MAJ Alex Gordon. He did this incredible thesis on Swiss logistics and deterrence against N**i aggression in WW2. I'd never considered how important mundane logistics like stockpiling food is to deterrence, but it makes sense that your national defense strategy is only as credible as your ability to sustain the fight."

MAJ Collin Hayward is a psyops officer and wrote his thesis on the costs and benefits of political warfare.

“My favorite peer learning points all came from the diversity of professional and life experiences represented in the class. Each of us obviously had our own backgrounds that shaped our perspectives. It was an incredible opportunity able to learn from peers who had taught at West Point, like MAJs Hannah Smith and Matt Rigdon, and peers with education and interests in fields as diverse as data and climate science, like MAJs Olly Akani and Jeff Nielsen. These, combined with a wealth of operational, educational, and combat experience led to some fascinating and insightful group discussions."

Maj Joseph "CAGY" Brundidge is an Air Force intelligence officer and SAMS student who wrote his MMAS on Integrated Air Defense and multi-domain air defense suppression strategies.

"My favorite peer learning point was understanding the changing character of war through the AoW curriculum. My classmates provided diverse Joint and multinational lenses. MAJ Nic Barber's (AUS) and MAJ Olly Akanni's theses explored the future of robotic automated systems and the digital strategies the Army must adopt to confront that emerging operating environment Their work, through historical context, illuminated what the future might demand of me."

Competing to be an Art of War scholar means competing to learn with some of your best peers. Art of War is 49% the program and 51% the officers you get to learn with. We're highlighting what 2024 scholars learned from each other.

MAJ Josh Storm is a Judge Advocate who wrote his MMAS on the United States’s deterrence posture of strategic ambiguity in the Taiwan Strait. Josh writes: “I learned so much from my classmates every single time we got together! One of my favorite learning points came from Maj. Josh 'KHAN'Moore. Army officers who study the Battle of the Bulge often underestimate the role the US Army Air Forces played throughout the campaign. During our preparation for the graduation staff ride and our staff ride itself, KHAN conducted in-depth research and provided insightful analysis on the USAAF’s contributions. This included day-by-day sortie information broken out by mission type, the impact of weather and how the USAAF mitigated that impact, and how the USAAF’s efforts across the European Theater supported the defense of Bastogne and the elimination of the Bulge. KHAN’s willingness to dive deep into primary sources and his unique joint perspective made everyone’s staff ride experience much more well-rounded.”

2024 scholar Major Nicholas Barber 🇦🇺 publishes his thesis on robotic autonomous systems achieving depth.

"The best militaries use emerging technology as an intellectual stimulus to design new operational concepts that guide the transformation necessary to overcome their adversaries. Thought, not just technology, will be essential for the [Australia Defense Forces] to prevail in these uncertain times."

This time on the Chief of Staff of the Army's recommended articles list!

“Failure to leverage AI tools in any capacity will mean forfeiting competitive advantages for our students, institution, and national defense. Crude, complete bans of AI tools will undermine our mission in the name of preserving it.”
