Montana Sheep Company Producers of Seedstock Targhee Sheep - Members of the Montana Wool Growers Association Our sheep are enrolled in the National Sheep Improvement Program.

We specialize in Targhee Rams whose daughters have: Excellent mothering abilities, reliable twinning rates, heavy weaning weights, & fine, dense, high yielding fleeces. We are proud members of the American Sheep Industry, Montana Wool Growers Association, the National Sheep Improvement Program, United States Targhee Sheep Association, the Montana Targhee Sheep Association, Black & White Sale, and the Front Range Wool Pool. NSIP is a federation of United States sheep and goat producers seeking to improve the genetic quality and economic viability of their livestock. NSIP uses scientifically proven technology to measure genetic performance. This technology is called EBV's. EBV is short for "Expected Breeding Value". An EBV is an estimate of the genetic merit of an animal for a single trait. Specifically, the EBV of an animal is the expected difference between the performance of that animal's progeney (or offspring) and the average progeny performance of all animals in the breed for that trait. The traits for which we evaluate our sheep are:
Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Maternal Milk Weight, Yearling Fat, Yearling Eye Muscle Depth, Fleece Weight, Fiber Diameter, Staple Length, and Number of Lambs Born. We use the Western Range Index developed by Montana State University and Virginia Polytech to help estimate the economic value of our sheep.

Here is our consignment for the 2026 Montana Ram Sale. Thank you for taking the time to look through the rams we will have in Miles City September 17th! Please visit the Montana Wool Growers Association website (www.mtsheep.org) for a link to the on-line sale catalog and to register for bidding. Some thoughts on our philosophy - we strive first and foremost to produce rams whose daughters will be excellent mothers with good milking ability. We also work very hard to develop a balanced ram that is not extreme for any one trait. Generally wool traits are antagonistic to growth traits. You will see that with some of these rams. But, with others we have hit middle ground. It is much easier to move carcass quality and growth traits quickly in a positive direction than it is wool. Developing a uniform wool clip is a lifetime investment and one that is easily damaged in a generation with the choice of the wrong ram. We strive to have fleeces that are uniform and carry to the belly regardless of micron. Comfort factor - next to the skin wearability is becoming increasingly important - as important as fiber diameter. CF must be at least 96% to produce the kind of wool in garments we like to wear next to our skin. All but one have a CF over 96%. 9 of the 15 have a CF which is 98.5% or higher. All of this being said, there is no such thing as a perfect ram. But, there are perfect choices for your goals as a producer. We are committed to improving the U.S. sheep industry and to helping you find the rams that work best for your operation.
