This week we’re recognizing engineer, physician and NASA astronaut Mae Jemison. In 1987, Jemison was chosen as one of fifteen candidates out of roughly 2,000 applicants and was accepted into the astronaut program. Jemison became the first African-American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on 12 September 1992. Since leaving NASA, Jemison continues to advocate strongly in favor of science education and getting minority students interested in STEM.

Special thanks to The University of Arkansas for all they did to make this happen.
