Excellent video on why ruminants (including sheep and goat) really need hay (any hay, but supplement poor hay) in the cold weather and other things you can try in order to deal with the freezing weather.

The link below is from a study showing that untreated respiratory disease in young calves can decrease marbling in the beef when they are finished out in the feedlot (even though carcass weights and other carcass traits were similar). It was a relatively small group of calves, and they were beef x dairy crosses, but it supports the idea that vaccination to keep calves' lungs healthy may help us to raise better beef.

We know the early life events of dairy replacement heifers have research-proven impacts on their later performance as adult dairy cows. Now, researchers are exploring how the development of young beef-cross calves influences their ultimate performance on the rail, with some surprising results.

Here is it is again. I had 6 cull cows and 6 calves in the sale pen the day of the sale and before we got the trailer to them, all but 2 (and 2 calves) had broken out. Now with the Argentina beef imports causing lower prices, I am crying that I didn't cull them sooner. Will still do it since prices are still good, just wish I had gotten that trailer there sooner.....

The herd is calving now, and culling decisions are being made (the teats below are one 'big' reason that cow will go). Weaning will provide another opportunity to remove animals from the breeding herd to improve efficiency and profitability. An efficient herd reduces greenhouse gas emissions and increases profits per pound of beef produced. The beefsite dot com has several articles related to culling, including one with the title "Cow Culling Decisions" (easily searchable on the site). Facebook would not let me post the link. I hope you can find it. Contact me if you would like me to send it to you.
