On May 4, 1961, thirteen civil rights activists—seven Black and six white—departed Washington, D.C., on Greyhound and Trailways buses, embarking on a journey through the Deep South to challenge the non-enforcement of Supreme Court decisions that had declared segregation in interstate travel unconstitutional. These Freedom Riders, organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), aimed to test compliance with rulings such as Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which prohibited segregation in bus terminals. Despite the legal victories, Southern states largely ignored these mandates, and the federal government failed to enforce them.

The Riders faced severe violence, including the firebombing of a bus in Anniston, Alabama, and brutal beatings in Birmingham. These attacks garnered national attention and pressured the federal government to act. On May 29, 1961, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to enforce desegregation in interstate travel. The ICC issued regulations that took effect on November 1, 1961, mandating the desegregation of interstate bus travel facilities.

in 1961: The original 13 Freedom Riders left Washington, D.C. for New Orleans on two Greyhound buses.

Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who made bus trips throughout the South protesting segregation by using “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters at bus stations. The group was often confronted by police officers, bystanders, and violent mobs.

In the fall of 1961, the Freedom Riders’ activism led the U.S. Interstate Commerce Commission to ban segregation in interstate bus travel. 🙌🏿 repost
