ENGL 36500: Literature and Imperialism is a new course offered through our English Department that also counts toward the women’s, gender, and sexuality studies major, certificate, and minor. The course examines the impact of imperialism on both colonizer and colonized in settings such as Africa, the Caribbean, the UK & Ireland, as well as in indigenous communities in the USA and New Zealand. Through the study of cultural and theoretical works, students will learn how the history of English-language literature is inextricably bound to colonization, patriarchy, violence, and discontent.
