Congratulations Dr. Sal Essajee! 🎉

Sal completed his PhD in Integrative Physiology under the mentorship of Dr. Johnathan Tune, defending his dissertation entitled “The Gordian Knot of Myocardial Perfusion: Disentangling the Complex Interplay Between Coronary Flow, Metabolism and Contractile Function.”

Sal’s research focused on understanding how the heart matches coronary blood flow to metabolism and function, challenging the current paradigm of supply-demand balance, which asserts that any imbalances between blood flow and metabolism, leads to ischemia and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. His results provide evidence for a perfusion-contraction-metabolism matching paradigm, such that under conditions where coronary blood flow is impaired, the heart reduces its functional and metabolic capacity, arguing against the possibility for there to be a supply-demand “imbalance”. The research team also observed, that in conditions such as heart failure with underlying microvascular dysfunction, the heart still adheres to the perfusion-contraction-metabolism matching paradigm. The results from the studies highlight the need for future experiments that quantify these parameters together, in order to better understand the mechanism by which the heart begins to fail.

After graduation, Sal will begin a postdoctoral fellow position at UT Southwestern Medical Center, studying heart failure in human patients under the mentorship of Drs. Benjamin Levine and Satyam “Tom” Sarma.

We were honored to welcome Dr. Roberto Lewis-Fernandez, professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University and director of the New York State Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence, to campus last week.

He gave the talk “Enhancing Cross-Cultural Equity in the Clinical Encounter” as part of the Dr. Marin Farias III Lectureship, an annual event hosted by the CBTS Values Committee.

The lectureship honors Martin Farias III, PhD, who graduated from CBTS in 2002 and passed away in 2008. While at UNT Health, Dr. Farias helped co-found UNT Health’s Society for the Advancement of Latinos in Science student group. This organization later affiliated with a national organization and became the UNT Health chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

The lectureship embodies the values of UNT Health and continues the legacy of Dr. Farias by inviting experts to campus to share their research and expertise with our students, faculty and staff.

A well deserved honor for Dr. Caroline Rickards 👏

Dr. Rickards was awarded the 2026 Presidential Service award by the American Physiological Society for outstanding service to APS and the broader physiology community.

Dr. Rickards’ substantial list of service to the Society includes chairing the Women in Physiology Committee and serving in multiple roles on the Environmental and Exercise Physiology section steering committee. She has also been a regular reviewer for several APS journals and was recently invited to serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Physiology. Since joining the Society in 2006, Dr. Rickards has participated in the annualAPS Summit every year, including organizing and chairing nine scientific sessions.

“It is a great honor to be recognized with the Presidential Service Award from the American Physiological Society. I have been privileged to work alongside so many outstanding colleagues and staff who have been part of my 20-year journey with APS,” Dr. Rickards said.

🎉 Way to go Dr. Dinh!

Viet Dinh completed his PhD in Integrative Physiology under the mentorship of Dr. Caroline Rickards, defending his dissertation entitled, "Pulsatile Perfusion Therapy: A Novel Treatment to Improve Survival from Hemorrhage.”

Almost 2 million people around the world die from severe blood loss every year. The Cerebral and Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory's research is focused on the development of "Pulsatile Perfusion Therapy,” a novel treatment to improve outcomes from blood loss and other ischemic conditions. In his dissertation, Viet found that PPT protected brain blood flow and oxygen saturation responses in humans under simulated blood loss. Viet also found that PPT protected arterial pressure and brain blood flow in rats following actual blood loss, leading to reduced vital organ injury and improved survival time.

This summer, Viet will move to Albany, New York, to begin his New York State Science Policy Fellowship with the Rockefeller Institute of Government. In his new role, he will work with executive branch of the New York state government to help bridge the worlds of science and policy.
