CRIM and SOC Majors:

Applications are currently being accepted for the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program.

If you are interested in being considered for one of the fall 2016 Inside-Out courses, please complete an application (applications were emailed to all majors before spring break) and send it to Daisy Ball ([email protected]) AND Deb McMakin ([email protected]) by Monday, March 28, 2016.

Description of the Inside-Out Program:

During the fall semester of 2016, ten FSU students (Outside students) will join ten people incarcerated at MCI-Framingham (Inside students) in two semester-long courses. Both courses will be held at MCI-Framingham, the local prison. Course meetings are held weekly from 12:00-3:30pm on Friday afternoons; attendance at all course meetings is mandatory.

Students who plan to take the internship course in the spring are strongly encouraged to attend this event. All other students are welcome to attend, too.

At the workshop, students will learn the steps to take to secure a high-quality internship; they will hear from peers interning this semester; they will meet community members who sponsor interns; and, they will learn from faculty about the requirements associated with the internship course.

The Sociology and Criminology department will host a panel discussion with former FSU students who are in graduate school, those who are applying to graduate school, and those who have already experienced graduate school. Speakers will talk briefly and answer questions such as: "Is graduate school right for me?" "What graduate program is right for me?" and "What's the best way to ask professors for letters of recommendation?"

Job description: Provide direct services and supports to individuals with intellectual disabilities in a residential setting; assist in the implementation of habilitative behavioral and recreational programs; maintain confidential records of individuals; accompany individuals to various appointments; provide leisure activities to individuals; assist individuals in meeting his/her personal care and nutritional needs; assist and support individuals in making choices in his/her life; maintain individuals rights by complying with applicable laws and regulations; and performs related work as required. Positions are available in the following locations; Worcester, Webster, Charlton, Rutland, Clinton, Hubbardston, and Barre.
Basic Requirements: Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
Dates of employment run from May 30, 2015- August 29, 2015.

Dear students,

A few spots are available for this summer’s study abroad program to Northern Ireland. The program will run four weeks, from July 6-August 1. Students can earn course credit through SOCI 201 – International Field Study in Sociology, which fulfills Gen Ed domain 3C (or Goal 12). If you are interested in attending, please contact Dr. Ferraro ([email protected]) ASAP. The deadline for joining the trip is this Friday, March 26th.

SOC and CRIM Students:

Two Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program courses will be offered in the fall, CRIM 270: Social Deviance and PSYC 322: Abnormal Psychology.

In brief, the Inside-Out Program allows FSU students to study as peers alongside prison inmates in a college class. The class meets once a week and is held at the prison.

If you’re interested in being considered for an Inside-Out course in the fall, please email [email protected] for an application.

Completed applications must be received by Monday, March 30, 2015, for full consideration.
