Kentucky State University is closing its main campus immediately based on recommendations from local law enforcement regarding a potential threat to campus safety.

Out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of the safety of our campus community, all faculty, staff, and students on the main campus should leave immediately and calmly, unless otherwise directed by law enforcement or University officials. Faculty and staff should resume work remotely where possible.

This closure does not currently impact activity at the Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm.

From the Andes to Appalachia

What began as an international learning experience in Peru is now inspiring research with the potential to support Kentucky farmers for generations to come.

KSU student Sienna Stewart, an Agriculture, Food, and Environment major and U.S. Department of Agriculture NextGen scholar, has earned the 2026 KentuckyView Undergraduate Fellowship for her geospatial research exploring how ancient terrace farming practices used in the Andes could help Eastern Kentucky communities address erosion, flooding, drought, and agricultural resilience.

Inspired by visits to Machu Picchu, Moray, and rural agricultural communities in Peru, Stewart used ArcGIS Pro to identify areas in Martin County, Kentucky, where bench terrace farming may be suitable. Her research highlights how global learning, applied science, and land-grant research can work together to create local solutions for the future of agriculture.

Her work reflects KSU’s commitment to experiential learning, innovation, and serving communities across the Commonwealth.

Kentucky State University faculty helped bring the Thoro10 Framework to the statewide stage at Pedagogicon 2026, highlighting how essential skills like communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and professionalism are being embedded into the student experience.

That work has advanced under the leadership of Dr. Frederick A. Williams Jr., Kentucky Graduate Profile Academy Team Lead. Dr. Williams was recently appointed Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences after serving several years as chair of the School of Criminal Justice and Government Relations.

Dr. Freeman-Taylor played a central role in Kentucky State’s Pedagogicon presence, serving as a featured panel participant and presenter. In that role, she shared insight into the University’s approach to academic assessment and helped elevate Kentucky State’s work before colleagues from across the Commonwealth.

From curriculum design to career readiness, KSU continues to prepare Thorobreds to lead, adapt, and succeed in a changing world.
