Dr. Harry Strachan to Speak at Banquet

Every year, one of the special events of Graduation Week is the Alumni/Graduation Banquet. Dr. Harry Strachan, pastor of the thriving Calvary Baptist Church of Ashland, Ohio is scheduled to speak at the Tuesday night, May 5th event. President Dennis and Dr. Strachan have been friends since they were teenagers, when their Dads worked together in training preachers to reach Canada. Dr. Strachan was born in Ontario, Canada, but now has pastored in the U.S. most of his ministry. His wit and enthusiasm bring a delightful combination to this year’s program. Brother Strachan and his church are a blessing.
This year, we will again host the Alumni/Graduation Banquet on the Hopewell Campus. With Gray Brothers Cafeteria closed, we are pleased to begin a new friendship with Sgt. Pepper’s Catering. We look forward to a delicious meal.
Come and enjoy Dr. Harry Strachan’s message, along with a night of good food, Christian music, and great fellowship. Please call Heritage Baptist College to make a reservation. (317) 738-3791 or (317) 833-0172.

Leadership Attitude

In the spring of 1944, four-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower diligently studied the strategy for the upcoming invasion of Europe. The “top secret” plans of Operation Overlord would become known in history as D-Day - June 6, 1944.
None of the military leaders knew if the great battle would be a success, or if N**i Germany would repel the expected invasion.
Still, General Eisenhower kept an optimistic outlook, and as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe he knew the importance of leadership. Writing his wife he reflected: “When pressure mounts and strain increases everyone begins to show the weaknesses in his makeup. It is up to the Commander to conceal his: above all to conceal doubt, fear and distrust.”
Eisenhower believed that leadership was a skill that could be learned, and he constantly studied. He declared: “the one quality that can be developed by studious reflection and practice is the leadership of men.” Eisenhower insisted that no matter how bad things got, the commander had to “preserve optimism in himself and in his command. Without confidence, enthusiasm and optimism in the command, victory is scarcely obtainable.”
On the eve of that great battle, Eisenhower visited his men. He realized that “optimism and pessimism are infectious and they spread more rapidly from the head downward than in any other direction.” Eisenhower understood that a commander’s optimism “has a most extraordinary effect upon all with whom he comes in contact. With this clear realization, I firmly determined that my mannerisms and speech in public would always reflect the cheerful certainty of victory – that any pessimism and discouragement I might ever feel would be reserved for my pillow.” (Ambrose, Stephen. D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climatic Battle of World War II. Simon & Schuster. New York: 1994. [ p. 61]).
The Christian can go forward with an even stronger confidence. He has a God, a Savior, a Bible, and an unchanging Faith.

The Strongest Attacks

One hundred and sixty-two years ago, three Union ships sailed up the Ogeechee River. Their mission was to destroy the Confederate stronghold at Fort McAllister. The fort was the last major defense for the city of Savannah, Georgia, the southern coastal railroad, and the Confederate blockade runners.
On that early November 19th morning, one of the boats towed the U.S.S. Para,a mortar schooner. At 8:15 a.m., the battle began with both sides firing their cannons. After six hours, the Union ships went back down river to join their squadron, receiving the worse for the engagement.
This was not the first time, nor the last time that the Union Navy would try to silence Fort McAllister. During an eight month period, the Union admiral would launch eight separate attacks, each becoming larger and more calculated.
The first attack of a fort by an ironclad happened on January 27, 1863 when the ironclad U.S.S. Montauk entered the fray. She was hit fifteen times by the guns at the fort, and only quit firing when she ran out of ammuniton.
Fort McAllister continued to withstand each attack, and remained in Confederate hands until General Sherman ended his famous “march to the sea” near the close of the war.
D.L. Moody was a young evangelist during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln had once visited Moody’s Chicago Sunday School, and the 25 year-old was eager to assist in the war needs.
Moody ended up helping in the Union camp with evangelistic meetings and in the hospitals. He made nine trips to the battle-fronts and he visited many battlefields during the Civil War. He experienced first hand, the death, sorrow, and destruction of the War between the States. He also saw the courage and determination of individuals.
Years later, D.L. Moody would write these words next to I Corinthians 10:13 in his Bible. Mr. Moody wrote: To be tempted is not to sin. The strongest attacks are made on the strongest forts.
Our great enemy will continue to attack us. We need to remember, the stronger the attack, the closer we need to seek refuge in Jesus.

One Man Changed the Course

Approximately eight miles southeast of Heritage Baptist College, stands a unique sign, probably the only one of its kind in America. The marker signifies a small cemetery that is in the middle of the road.
When Johnson County decided to lay out East County Rd. 400S, over 100 years ago, the path of the roadway placed it directly through a small cemetery. The workman removed the graves, except the grave of pioneer Nancy Barnett (d. Dec. 1, 1831) and six of her relatives.
Nancy Barnett’s grandson, Daniel Doty, refused to allow the county workers to remove her body. His grandmother had wanted to be buried on that knoll above Sugar Creek, and he would honor her wish. He sat by the plot with a shotgun, warning the grave diggers to stay away.
Doty ended up winning the standoff. The road was eventually built, the grave remained, but the highway was diverted around either side of the protected plot. In 1912, a concrete slab was placed over the mound and years later a historical sign. In 2016, because of a farm equipment accident, the county decided to change the large earthen mound. The bodies were dug up, the roadbed deepened, and the bodies were reinterred under a streamlined marker.
In southern Johnson County, in the middle of a farming community, stands a lone concrete slab in the middle of the road - a tribute to a pioneer and her kin. The setting also is a lasting reminder to the determination of one man. A man who saw his heritage challenged, and stood up to the prevailing flood of pressure.
One person can accomplish what many think is the impossible, or at least the improbable.

The Unknown Tomorrow

At 40 years of age, John Adams lay deathly sick of a fever, far away from his family, and in Holland. His illness would last nearly six weeks.
This ardent Revolutionary Patriot, had helped to draft the Declaration of Independence five years before, and now in Europe, he had been removed from his family for nearly a year.
His political task was to raise money and to secure recognition of the United States with the Dutch government.
In that early fall of 1781, sick, and unsuccessful, he wrote to Congress asking to be recalled, stating that his mission was “useless.”
What Mr. Adams didn’t know, was that right at that moment, the Revolutionary War, which had gone badly for the Americans, was changing. On Friday, October 19, 1781 (244 years ago), British General Cornwallis surrendered his 7,000 troops to General George Washington.
John Adams had long pressed the French for a strong naval presence in America. At exactly the right time and place, Admiral de Grasse arrived with a French fleet of 28 large warships which stopped Cornwallis’ escape. However, the good news did not arrive across the Atlantic Ocean for a month.
Even during Mr. Adam’s discouragement, all was going forth as God ordained it. In a matter of weeks John Adam’s mission also became a success. In the following year he served with the American delegation that drafted and signed the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War. (McCullough, David. John Adams. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2001 [p. 271]).
God had everything going forward in His plan. The Bible illustrates this in another way in the life of Daniel as he waited for God to answer.
We have only to trust the Lord, follow Him, or if He so chooses, simply wait.
