How do you turn civics and history into content people actually want to watch? Ask Cory McCants!

Cory hosts and produces Buffalo Toronto Public Media’s Compact Civics and Compact History, using short-form digital storytelling to introduce audiences to government, civic responsibility, and lesser-known stories from American history.

On Sept. 16, he’s bringing that work to Fredonia as our featured Constitution Day speaker.

For Communication students interested in video production, content creation, media, storytelling, journalism, public media, or audience engagement, this is a chance to see how those skills are being used professionally and to meet someone doing the work.

COMM students: meet BTPM’s Cory McCants!

The Department of Communication is proud to co-sponsor Fredonia’s 2026 Constitution Day featured speaker, Cory McCants of Buffalo Toronto Public Media (BTPM).

Cory is the host and producer of BTPM’s Compact Civics and Compact History, short-form digital series that use storytelling to make history, government, voting, and civic responsibility accessible to younger audiences.

At Fredonia, Cory will present: A Compact History of the Constitution: A Different Perspective

As part of Fredonia’s Constitution Day programming, Communication professors Mike Igoe and Mark Kiyak will join Tom Calderone, President & CEO of Buffalo Toronto Public Media (BTPM), for "Public Media & Democracy: Why It Matters."

The lunchtime discussion will explore public media, reliable information, civic engagement, and the important relationship between media and an informed public.

A group of Japanese students are visiting SUNY Fredonia for two weeks to get some English instruction as well as partake of cultural experiences ( like visiting Niagara Falls).
It's part of the University's Pathway Program.
Professor Mike Igoe gave them a lecture on "English will not Kill you !"
He also spent some time with them at Dunkirk's Music on the Pier as well as at the Fredonia Farmers Market

Congratulations to Dr. Angela McGowan-Kirsch on being selected for the 2026 Innovations in Democracy Cohort through the AASCU American Democracy Project and Unite America. The program brings together faculty from across the country to advance civic learning and democratic engagement in higher education. 🎉 Student Spotlight: Molly Sunick 🎉
We’re excited to celebrate Molly Sunick for her outstanding work presenting at SURC!

During her internship with Iron Works, Molly gained hands-on experience applying communication skills in a professional setting. She worked on projects that strengthened her ability to connect with audiences, contribute to organizational messaging, and navigate real-world communication challenges.

At SURC, Molly showcased this work by reflecting on her internship experience—highlighting what she learned, the skills she developed, and how classroom concepts translated into practice. Her presentation demonstrated both professionalism and a strong understanding of how communication operates beyond the classroom.
