Beyond Borders: Supporting an Oasis for LGBTQ+ Immigrants in the Central Valley

Friday, April 17, 2026 | 3pm to 4:30pm | LIB 3125

The Central Valley has long been a place of refuge for LGBTQ+ individuals, including those fleeing dangerous conditions abroad. Adam Ryan Chang, Executive Director of Oasis Legal Services, will explore how the U.S. immigration and asylum system shapes the experiences of LGBTQ+ immigrants, with particular attention to safety, identity, and belonging in the region. He will share practical strategies for building affirming spaces, supporting individuals beyond crisis, and engaging in meaningful, community-centered advocacy.

Speaker: Adam Ryan Chang is Executive Director of Oasis Legal Services, where he leads a multi-site nonprofit providing free legal representation and social services to LGBTQ+ immigrants and asylum seekers. He has guided the organization’s growth while advancing efforts to eliminate barriers to care. Adam brings expertise in immigration advocacy, philanthropy, and coalition-building, and advises funders and community leaders on equitable practices. A q***r, second-generation Asian American living with HIV, he brings both professional and lived experience to his leadership.

The College of Social Sciences Teach-Ins series was imagined as a way to bring our faculty experts into timely conversations with our campus community about social and political events and changes as they are occurring so that folks can learn, ask questions, and leave better informed than they were before.

In light of the testimonies that have come forward from survivors about Cesar Chavez’s history of s*xual violence, three of our excellent faculty will be holding a teach-in on Monday, April 6 at 10 A.M. to discuss the challenges with history, memory, and gendered politics in the context of s*xual violence in the farmworker movement.

Please join Dr. Alina Méndez (Chicano and Latin American Studies), Dr. Larissa Mercado-López (Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies), and Dr. Cierra Sorin (Sociology) for this teach-in titled: “Difficult Histories, Contested Memories: Gender Politics, Accountability, and Collective Struggle”

Where: LIB 2206
When: April 6, 10-11:30 A.M.

Had a wonderful time celebrating National Day of Reading with the Department of Liberal Studies. Students from local k-8 schools came and enjoyed a read out loud of LGBTQ2+ inclusive children’s literature. They got to make art work and enjoy the amazing LGBTQ2+ children’s literature collection our Arne Nixon center has. Special thank you to Dr Selena Van Horn, Chair of Liberal Studies for continuing to champion LGBTQ2+ inclusive education. This day was her vision and we all benefit from it! Thank you to the for all the support and fun activities. Thank you to all our student volunteers. Shout out to our WGSS 124: Gender and Sexuality in Education students for volunteering their time! 🌈❤️🏳️‍⚧️

Had a wonderful training by Vasmer Vang from on creating a country conditions report. Our WGSS 128: Q***r Migration class will be creating country conditions reports on LGBTQ+ human rights for Oasis and their clients. These are critical documents used by LGBTQ+ asylum seekers to show evidence in support of their asylum claims.
