🎓 Alumni Highlight: Joanna Lenta Samana, P.E. (Electrical) and ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE)

We’re proud to celebrate Joanna Lenta Samana, Senior Assistant Director at Malaysia’s Energy Commission, whose career is making an impact on the future of energy.

Today, Joanna contributes to the development of energy transition and electrical safety policies and technical guidelines, while sharing her expertise across national, international and ASEAN-level platforms — from national radio and conferences to government-hosted events and global energy engagements.

Reflecting on the journey, Joanna shares:

“Lyles College of Engineering gave me more than an engineering degree; it gave me the tools to think, collaborate and solve real problems. Today, I carry that foundation into Malaysia’s energy sector as a senior government officer — turning what I once received into something I can give back to a much larger society.”

Joanna’s journey shows how an engineering education can become a foundation for meaningful impact far beyond the classroom. 🐾

This summer, Dr. Hovannes Kulhandjian, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, mentored high school students through an intensive one-week AI and Cybersecurity Workshop. Students explored the fundamentals of AI and cybersecurity through engaging lectures, hands-on activities, and practical exercises. 🧑‍💻 🐾

Students also visited Dr. Kulhandjian’s Secure Communications and Embedded Systems Laboratory, where they learned about ongoing research projects in AI, robotics, autonomous systems, and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). A highlight was experiencing the BCI project firsthand—wearing an EEG headset, viewing their brainwave signals in real time, and learning how brain activity can be used to control intelligent systems. 🧠
