ALESE We design, research and evaluate public engagement with science at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (Appalachian Laboratory).

The Appalachian Laboratory Environmental Science Education (ALESE) program promotes environmental and science literacy among learners of all ages and in diverse settings. Our team designs, implements, evaluates and researches education projects with a focus on integrating real-world science practices, tools and professionals into K-12 and informal education settings. Our work builds directly on en

vironmental science research conducted by scientists at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Appalachian Laboratory.

We're making our NOAA B-WET Wave of Plastic project available online.
Visit https://www.umces.edu/waveofplastic to check it out and learn more!

Of the plastic waste collected in 2015, only 9% was recycled. Wave of Plastic Lesson 1 explores per-capita consumption. Discover how personal choices regarding the use & disposal of materials either contribute to or reduces plastic waste. Student Workbook: http://ow.ly/uNkK50ztfUK

A lot of our projects entail working with classroom teachers. We'd like to give a shout out to them and all the other amazing educators out there who are working so hard not only to educate their students, but to totally restyle their teaching methods to meaningfully reach students at home during this pandemic. Thank you for all you do! You're rockstars!

EDIT: The app is no longer free; it costs $4.99.

Check out this free app! It’s great for our teacher friends encouraging students to explore steams and creeks, as well as our nature-loving friends who are interested in learning more about the critters they come across.

The app allows educators, citizen scientists, and creek enthusiasts to learn about water quality and identify aquatic invertebrates with a user-friendly suite of tools.

Guess what?! It's Science Friday! A citizen science project we work with, Zooniverse, will be featured on today's show at 2PM ET.
They'll discuss how the public is helping researchers discover planets around distant stars, track antibiotic resistance, transcribe ancient texts, tag wild animals, and much more through the world's largest platform for online citizen science, Zooniverse. (You can participate in these projects too!)

All you need to participate is the internet. Dr. Laura Trouille, The Adler Planetarium’s VP of Citizen Science and co-Lead for Zooniverse will join for ~10 minutes.

Here's the Live event blurb: Can’t decide which citizen science project to get started with? You don’t have to—for the last full week of April, Citizen Science Month, Science Friday is hosting four days of livestreams with Zooniverse, the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research:

Monday, April 27 – Planet Four: Take a virtual trip to Mars’ south pole! Help planetary scientists learn about the seasons on the red planet—and learn how to make your own Martian landscapes at home.

Tuesday, April 28 – Anti-Slavery Manuscripts: Do you have trouble identifying a handwritten “F” from an “S”? So do computers—join us to start training your brain for this important project that is working to make historical anti-slavery artifacts from the Boston Library accessible for global research.

Wednesday, April 29 – The University of Wyoming Raccoon Project: These “trash pandas” have been training all year, and it’s time to crown the Raccoon Superlatives! Who do you think deserves to win Most Athletic, Best Dressed, and Teacher’s Pet?

Thursday, April 30 – Bash the Bug: Become a Basher! Use your pattern-matching skills to help fight antibiotic resistance and Tuberculosis with a few clicks.

It's Citizen Science Month, and Science Friday is an official partner to help you become a part of the community! Join us for our livestream series.

Happy Earth Day!!
A great way to celebrate Earth Day is to join a citizen science project that you can do near your home or even in your own backyard. What is citizen science you ask? Volunteers, just like you, participate in science research.

Our Public Engagement at the Center team leads and supports many cool citizen science efforts.

Join sustainability researcher Erik Assadourian for a webinar that explores the sustainability challenges just over the horizon and how we can, and must, redesign education to prepare future leaders to handle the societal challenges ahead.

Erik Assadourian is an independent sustainability researcher, author, and adjunct professor at Goucher College. He was co-director of five Worldwatch Institute State of World reports, including "Redefining Global Security," "Is Sustainability Still Possible?," and "EarthEd: Rethinking Education on a Changing Planet."

Kudos to the guardians and teachers who are working together to educate students remotely! Tackling the basics - science, math, reading and art - can be challenging; and environmental education may seem like an extra burden on an already heavy load. However, environmental education is a great way to incorporate all the subjects you need to teach with the added benefit of time outside (if you can safely manage it!). We would like to support your efforts by providing links to some resources from reliable environmental education lessons that you might find helpful as you navigate this new territory. Check these out, and don't hesitate to message us if you need additional specific ideas or support. Stay well!
