CSUF 24-Hour Play Festival is back! Whether you are a playwright, director, or actor, the 24-hour Play Festival offers unique challenges to everyone involved. Plus, it is a lot of fun and a great way to get to know your classmates!

Starting at 10:30pm on September 8th, artists will gather in The Arena (CPAC 115) to meet and be divided into groups consisting of a director and actors who are assigned to a playwright. Groups will then choose a random prompt and playwrights will write a short, 10-minute play inspired by that prompt. Playwrights will go off to write overnight and at 9:00am on Saturday, September 9th, groups will reconvene to begin rehearsing their play. Plays will be fully staged and rehearsed during the morning hours and, after a short break, they will tech in the afternoon. After another short break for dinner, the fully staged plays will be presented starting at 8:00pm that night in The Arena.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out the application by Tuesday, September 5th https://forms.gle/7jCEzW6NbzF3pQuBA

We will follow up with everyone who signs up with more details and specifics prior to the start of the festival.

If you are interested in helping out on the production team side of things (sound, lighting, stage managing, etc), please email: [email protected].

FAQS

Participants can be any year or major the Department of Theatre & Dance (BA, BFA, 1st year, 3rd year, Actor, Dancer, Playwright, etc.) - all are welcome to participate!

Participants cannot miss any portion of the scheduled 24-hour festival. If you want to participate, you must be available from 10:30pm September 8th to 10:30pm September 9th except where outlined in the day’s schedule and with this exception: First meeting will end at approximately 11:30pm on September 8th. At that time, directors, actors, and production team members are free to leave, go home, get some sleep, etc. It is expected that playwrights will be writing and may need until the 8:00am deadline on Saturday, September 9th to complete their 10-minute play scripts. Whatever time playwrights do not use in that 12:30am - 8:00am window to write, is of course theirs to do with as they please.

All scripts will be due by 8:00am on Saturday, September 9th. Any playwrights not submitting their scripts by this deadline will be exempt from participation and subsequently their groups unable to participate.

Artists are not permitted to create their own groups of playwright - director - actors. Groups will be assigned at random by the 24-Hour Play Festival committee in order to ensure fairness and a mixture of upper/lower classmen and majors/concentrations within each group.

Directors will be responsible for providing a ground plan using only the studio furniture available in The Arena and a script marked with any necessary sound and light cues by their assigned tech rehearsal.

Actors must memorize their lines and perform completely off book.

Actors and Directors are not permitted to act within their play and plays may only be staged using the actors assigned to their group.
