Jaylan Ferguson competes tomorrow at the 2022 USA Powerlifting Collegiate National Championship! He’s made a lot of progress in the last couple of years and there is more to come. Last year the qualifying total for his weight class was 1,262 pounds, this year the standard was raised to 1,433 pounds but Jaylan exceeded it with a total of 1,466! Look for him to push past the 1,500 lbs mark tomorrow in Lombard, Illinois!

Not all exercises have to be taken to failure or performed with maximal weights to induce strength improvements. Nate Burgess demonstrates the squat performed with a pause at the halfway point of the descent. He’s using only 65% of maximum for four sets of three. This exercise improves technique and flexibility as the lifter knows they have to descend deeper to accomplish the lift. This will have excellent transfer to his competition squat.

The PE/Strength & Conditioning Concentration is unique compared to other similar programs throughout the country. Instead of a unit from a course or maybe a one credit hour course for weight training, we offer a 300 level, 3-credit hour course in Strength & Power Development. Pictured here are three students being put through USAW’s “prerequisites” that determine if the are physically ready to begin learning the Sn**ch and the Clean & Jerk. Can you fully extend your elbows while holding the in-line overhead in the military press? Can you perform a full squat with a barbell held overhead with the appropriate sn**ch grip? Can you squat to full depth in the front squat position with all fingers in contact with the bar and elbows up? Is your spine locked in extension during the start position of a sn**ch grip deadlift? If you struggle with these positions your success in the Sn**ch and Clean & Jerk will be very limited. Start right, finish right!

The first week of classes has come to an end! While the academics are revving up, it’s time to turn up our training a couple of notches too as our first competition is only a month away! In the video junior Jaylan Ferguson performs some overload training on the bench press. Using the Slingshot allows him to experience a much heavier load than normal. He’s handling 320 lbs on this set, 20 lbs over his best.

Happy Birthday to our Senior lifter Nate Burgess! He’s looking forward to a great final year!

The Fall Semester is starting soon! Keep your grades high and your squats low!

Yesterday Jaylan Ferguson hit a huge personal goal, bench pressing 300 lbs! As a freshman Jaylan started our program with a 200 lbs bench press and he has added 100 lbs to that in two years of training. Excellent progress comes from excellent consistency!

Jaylan Ferguson has been working hard on his squat technique all summer, switching from a high bar position to a low bar position. Today he squatted a training PR of 230 kg/507 lbs! To put this in perspective, Jaylan’s best squat in training heading into Collegiate Nationals was 440-455 and he squatted 512 in competition. So, we are very excited to see what he will squat in competition on 9/25 in Columbia.
