Computational Literacy Librarian

The University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries seek a proactive, collaborative, and engaging Computational Literacy Librarian to contribute to and enhance an existing team that delivers data-intensive research methodology services to the University of Florida community. This twelve-month, tenure-track faculty position will help the UF community become critical users of digital technologies, such as AI powered tools, data visualization programs, data wrangling or storytelling tools, digital scholarship or data repositories, etc. The exact mix of skills that you develop over time will depend on your interests and the ongoing needs of the UF community. This position plays a vital role in ensuring that the UF community has access to the skills, tools, and support needed to effectively collect and discover research data to gain new insights and ultimately create new knowledge, as well as navigate the ethical and policy issues that surround those activities, regardless of discipline. As data becomes an increasingly critical and valuable research asset, this position will also play a role in advising the Libraries on policies and best practices related to the selection and acquisition of datasets for inclusion in the Libraries’ collections. This position will guide and support the Libraries’ efforts to use local and open-source collections to create research datasets and explore the use of machine learning and AI methodologies to facilitate research using those datasets.

The Computational Literacy Librarian builds and maintains strong, collegial relationships across the Libraries and campus. These relationships support the development of collaborations and partnerships that reflect the University’s Core Values and support various services and programs that contribute to the University’s education, research, and service missions. This position provides expertise and consults users on the techniques and best practices to support the campus community’s data literacy needs to support research and learning. This position is also responsible for connecting researchers with complementary library, campus, and third-party resources and services to further support researchers’ needs.

As a member of the Academic Research Consulting & Services (ARCS) Department, this position contributes to shared departmental and Library-wide goals and collaborates with existing ARCS specialists, providing services on various research methodologies and scholarly communications issues. The Computational Literacy Librarian is key in advancing the Smathers Libraries' strategic commitment to research support and contributing to campus efforts to grow the university's research enterprise. This position provides exciting opportunities for the successful candidate to apply their knowledge, shape the development of vital research infrastructure, and engage in a collaborative team serving a diverse community of scholars.

The Special and Area Studies Collections (SASC) Department at the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida seeks a creative, innovative, and service-oriented individual to develop and manage all aspects of the Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection, with a passion for collection development and a commitment to promoting its use through scholarship, classroom instruction, and public outreach. The collection has strengths in natural history, history of science, British and American literature, and other areas of distinction, with several supporting endowments. Its holdings intersect with many of the collections in the department, especially pre-eminent collections, including the Latin American and Caribbean Collection, the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, and the Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica. The Curator provides leadership in an environment that values diversity, collaboration, and excellence. This position is a year-around (12-month), full-time tenure-track library faculty position.

The Libraries encourage staff participation in reaching management decisions and consequently the Rare Book Curator will serve on various committees and teams. The Copyright and Scholarly Communications Librarian builds and maintains strong, collegial relationships across the Libraries and campus. This position provides expertise in alternative publishing models, open scholarship, author rights, copyright, and compliance with public-access requirements for federally funded research and is responsible for tracking trends that affect access to scholarly information. Curator, Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature

The Curator of the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature is a year-round (12 month) tenure track library faculty position, which will lead a preeminent collection known for its exceptional breadth and depth in Anglo-American holdings. The Baldwin Library supports emerging scholarship by actively diversifying its holdings and applying a critical lens to collections and activities. The Curator oversees major endowment funds supporting collection development and programming, including speaker series and research fellowships.

The Curator manages materials and access, from acquisition to cataloging and digitization, and engages the UF campus and beyond through instruction, exhibits, collection promotion, and collaboration on projects and work groups. The Curator deepens and expands support for the study of children’s literature and interdisciplinary topics, and engages with faculty, students, and the Center for Children’s Literature and Culture. The Curator oversees fellowship programs which support the research of scholars, librarians and educators in the Baldwin Library, and serves as a bridge between public and academic librarians through the Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship.

Scholarly Communications Librarian

The University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries seek a Scholarly Communications Librarian who will be responsible for providing leadership for the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida’s services in support of students and faculty seeking guidance on fair use, copyright and intellectual property, as well as outreach and training efforts to build a scholarly communications program that supports open scholarship, open education, and open data. This twelve-month, tenure-track faculty position educates the university community about modes of open access scholarly publication, copyright and intellectual property issues and their impact on scholarly inquiry and instruction. The Scholarly Communications Librarian will form strong collaborations with colleagues across the libraries to provide training and consultant services to strengthen and broaden copyright and publishing competencies within the Libraries.

The Scholarly Communications Librarian also provides guidance on repository services and support for researchers’ publication, preservation, and funder compliance needs. This includes advising on the Institutional Repository at the University of Florida (IR@UF) as well as general, funder, and subject-specific repositories. This will include maintenance and outreach supporting the UF Author Rights Policy, implemented in Spring 2022.

The University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries seek a Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Librarian & Research Services Coordinator. This position is a year-round (12-month), tenure-track library faculty position in Library West, the Humanities & Social Sciences (H&SS) branch of the George A. Smathers Libraries. This position oversees the development, management, and coordination of Library West’s extensive collection of resources encompassing all formats related to women’s and gender studies. While this position's primary collection management focus is women’s and gender studies, an essential secondary aspect involves a strong understanding of its intersections with the humanities and social sciences.

Additionally, this position serves as the Library West Research Services Coordinator, including managing the Library West Research Assistance Desk and On Call scheduling, promoting, and marketing Library West’s research assistance-related services to students and faculty, and maintaining Research Assistance Desk statistics and other related assessment data and reports. The WGS Librarian also works closely with other library employees, providing support in the broader areas of the humanities and social sciences, especially overlapping, interdisciplinary areas, managing specialized WGS subject area reference, outreach, and instruction services, and participating in branch and Libraries-wide general reference, library instruction, and outreach programming.

The University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries seek a Florida Political Papers Archivist. The position is a 12-month, tenure-track library faculty position in the Special and Area Studies Collections Department (SASC). The successful applicant will curate manuscript collections in the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History related to the state’s political past, as well as those related to Native and Indigenous peoples. The Archivist builds archival collections, processes or supervises processing, and provides reference assistance for these collection areas. The Archivist plays an integral role in public and technical services aspects of the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History, collaborating with personnel, providing access to, and promoting Florida history materials through programs, exhibits, and publications. In collaboration with SASC’s Collection Services Unit, the Archivist ensures that collections are processed in a timely fashion and accessible broadly.

The Florida Political Papers Archivist prioritizes collections for processing, coordinates with the head of Public Services when relevant collections are used, identifies materials for digitization and provides necessary metadata, delivers interpretive content for an online presence, and works closely with the Senior Director of Development and External Relations to secure funding for the collections. The Archivist coordinates with other department curators to preserve and describe the department’s rich and extensive digital holdings. The position also collaborates with and advises colleagues in Humanities and Social Sciences on related political and Native American archival collections and programming. The position supports academic areas such as Political Science, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program, and UF’s interdisciplinary programs. The Archivist develops archival collections to support current and emerging research and instructional needs, provides general and specialized subject area reference services, research assistance, and library instruction, and participates in departmental and Libraries-wide outreach programming.
