🐊 UF CVM 50th Fridays

Today, one chapter closes and another begins as the college's deanship transitions from Dean Zimmel to Dr. Adin. As our seventh dean, and the only female to ever serve in the role, UF CVM is better than ever before as one of the premier veterinary education institutions and teaching hospitals in the country thanks in part to her legacy of leadership across our entire enterprise.

Last fall, our Charter Class presented Dean Zimmel with a commemorative "Class of 1980" yearbook, which did not exist prior, documenting a transformational time in our college's history.

After a record-high 36 leprosy cases in Florida last year and 19 cases tracked through the Florida Department of Health (DOH) this year thus far, 's Dr. Juan Campos Krauer is shining the light on the potential link to armadillos.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), nine-banded armadillos naturally carry the bacteria that transmits leprosy, which can be spread through soil or direct contact.

Ahead of the Emerging Pathogens Institute's 2026 Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) Symposium on Wednesday, September 2, Dr. Campos Krauer talked all things armadillos and leprosy with WGCU Public Media in Fort Myers.

"Armadillos are the only mammal in the Americas that can carry and actually develop leprosy, and so we think that could be one of the cases why we're seeing it in Florida since the animal is so abundant."

🐊 UF CVM 50th Fridays

It was an honor to welcome the UF Foundation National Board and distinguished University of Florida leaders at CVM in April for the board's spring meeting reception and to kick off our 50th Anniversary festivities 🌟

Decked out in orange, blue and all dressed up, we transformed our small animal hospital lobby and had the opportunity to showcase our beautiful hospitals and several impactful programs and initiatives: The Richard Lichter Charity for Dogs, our Open Heart Surgery Program for dogs and our Equine Performance Lab Treadmill Program.

One thing is for sure: our college's accomplishments and advancements through the past five decades would not be possible without the incredible generosity of our donors, alumni & friends! From facilities to scholarships and specialty initiatives -- thank you for your investment in our success.
