Since 2005, the Florida Terrapin Project has been engaging citizen scientists to search for and monitor diamondback terrapins in the panhandle. The project will soon be expanding to the Big Bend!

While surveying, volunteers keep an eye out for tracks, nests, egg shells, and of course, terrapins. The project operates in conjunction with state and local partners including the USGS and FWC, particularly with satellite tagging and data sharing.

There are 7 subspecies of diamondback terrapins and 5 of them live in Florida. 3 of those 5 are thought to only live in Florida. If you spot a diamondback terrapin, or if you're interested in joining the project, reach out to Rick O'Connor, UF/IFAS FSG agent for Escambia County - [email protected]

All terrapins were handled under FDEP permit # - 01012401 and FWC permit # - LSSC - 17 - 00084E
