The Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere at the University of Florida has three interrelated purposes:

1. to facilitate and promote the research programs of humanities* scholars at the University,

2. to provide an intellectual space and a physical location within the University and College for critical and collaborative discussions of the humanities that reach across and beyond indivi

dual disciplines, and

3. to provide a place for outreach to the community in which we live and teach. Building on the work of individual departments, the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere emphasizes collaboration and critical discussion as its basic program models.

That’s a wrap on this year’s Humanities Writing Retreat! ✨

Over the past several days, UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences humanities faculty and graduate students across the humanities stepped away from their usual routines to focus, write, reflect and share space with one another. From quiet writing sessions to thoughtful conversations over lunch, the retreat offered time to reconnect with the work that can be difficult to sustain during the busy academic year.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this week so meaningful. Thank you for bringing your ideas, energy and dedication to the retreat. We’re proud to support the humanities scholars whose research continues to ask important questions, tell vital stories and shape new ways of understanding our world.

Until next year! ✍️📚

Rainy skies couldn’t stop day two of our Writing Retreat! 🌧️✍️

Our dedicated faculty and graduate students gathered once again for a day of focused writing, reflection and meaningful progress on their individual projects. Their enthusiasm brightened an otherwise gloomy day and reminded us how energizing it can be to make space for scholarly work in community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and brought such thoughtful, productive energy into the room. We’re looking forward to carrying this momentum through the rest of the retreat!

This past Wednesday, we gathered to celebrate our graduating Humanities Engagement Scholars and Grass Scholar alumni with treats, sparkling cider and a toast to their many achievements. 🎓✨
We are so proud to have been part of their journey at UF and even prouder of the thoughtful, curious and compassionate scholars they have become. Through their research, creativity, community engagement and commitment to asking meaningful questions, they remind us why the humanities matter.

To our scholars, and to all students graduating this week and weekend: congratulations! This moment is well deserved, and we are cheering you on as you move into the next stage of your lives.
No matter where your journey takes you, the humanities will always be with you, and so will we. We will always be here to support you, celebrate you and welcome you back.

Congratulations, graduates! 🐊🎉

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the University of Florida HiPerGator tour. As a follow-up to the launch of our Digital Humanities Lab, it was energizing to explore the scale and reality of AI up close, including the cybersecurity dimensions, the infrastructure behind the scenes, and the design choices that keep systems running responsibly (we loved hearing about sustainability considerations like closed-loop cooling).

We’re excited for future programming and opportunities to connect the possibilities of AI to the humanities. Stay tuned for a full recap, plus upcoming events and future tours. Thank you to the UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences comms team for taking such lovely photos!
