At UCDA 2024, Hien Phan, one of our MxD peers, shared her participatory design research with as a part of the 3rd APIDSE Annual Cultural Fair, November 2023. By engaging zines as a communal, revolutionary form of making, they together hosted a Zine Open Call “You and Your Cultural Identities” and a pop-up zine station at the APIDSE office space. Through several weeks of this process, Hien had a chance to be closer to the student communities of diverse cultures at UF, observing their interactions, conversations, and memories in-person and through submitted zines. I’m excited to share with you an interactive workshop with designers and design educators at UCDA in May 2024! As part of ongoing research that centers positionalities in professional development, UF MxD students Hien Phan, Santana Nyanje, and Isabella Arrazola shared strategic mapping, adapted from ecosystem mapping (IxDF, 2021) and intersectionality theories (Crenshaw, 1989). Using just sticky notes, color markers, and papers, participating designers visualized their self-portrait and vision for a future professional self, while quickly noting the actors and resources that critically matter to their trajectory. This physically embodied process is quite different from Miro or journaling, providing an accessible, fun way to reflect, plan, and exchange conversations with other designers in the field.

I’m thrilled to share a presentation at UCDA in May 2024 by Roshanak Keyghobadi about the rich histories of graphic design in Iran, with a special focus on the incredible contributions of Iranian women graphic designers. Discover how the art and culture of Iran have influenced graphic design and learn about the remarkable women who have made their mark in this field. As a female Iranian designer, I found this session deeply inspiring, as it highlights the strength and creativity of Iranian women in the face of challenges and showcases the cultural richness that shapes our design heritage.

The UCDA (University & College Designers Association) conference gathers designers and educators to share ideas, showcase innovative work, and discuss the future of design. Ana Herruzo, an Associate Professor of Immersive Experience Design, delivered an impressive keynote presenting her work, which combines experiential design, virtual reality, and emerging media. She displayed projects such as the ASU-USC halftime drone show to demonstrate how real-time graphics and XR are transforming design and creating impactful, immersive experiences. Jake Pinholster, the founding director of MIX, discussed his experience with theatrical design and immersive experiences, emphasizing true immersion that goes beyond visuals for deep engagement. He shared the Worlds for Change Challenge, in which students create immersive worlds to address social issues.
