Yesterday evening, Dr. Steve Yacovelli conducted a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training for the officers of all TKE Chapters.
This training reiterated the message that being an effective leader takes not just skill but self-awareness: awareness of what we think consciously but also what our unconscious selves may be thinking, too. And in today’s climate, we need to ensure that our leadership actions, words, and decisions are done in an open and inclusive manner.
We explored the three areas that every leader should focus on in order to be more consciously inclusive. From THINK IN about our own unconscious biases, to SPEAK UP to create a more inclusive chapter, to ACT OUT in ways you can foster a feeling of belonging for everyone within our fraternity (and beyond).

The world is full of kind people, and Roberta Gates is a prime example! Earlier this week, Roberta extended her help to Frater Chauhan who is spending his break by himself in our House. She stocked up Frater Chauhan for the entirety of the winter and got him food from the local food pantry. The Delta Chapter of TKE will be working with her in an attempt to serve the Galesburg community!

Roberta Gates has been a member of the Galesburg community for a majority of her life and as such has tried to give back when and where she can. She was a medical social worker at Proctor Hospital in Peoria for several years and taught at Carl Sandburg College for a number of years as well (2012 through the end of 2017). She is a grandmother of five and on most nice days you can often find Roberta, her husband Tony, their two dogs and occasionally a grandkid or two walking through campus at some point in the afternoon. She currently runs a facebook group (Mask Up Galesburg) that centers around mask safety in and around the Galesburg area and is a member of the the Galesburg Blessing Box Helpers facebook group (you may have seen the random boxes around town in people's yards - those are blessing boxes - take what you need and leave what you can). The blessing boxes are meant to help those in Galesburg who are facing food insecurity. Roberta plans to have one put in her yard so that the Knox students (and anyone else) who walks by her home will always be able to find something to eat when they need it. Just as a side note, she has a page set up for her dog (Tucker Gates) and usually posts when they are heading to campus - give them a follow!

Earlier today, Frater Chauhan gave a talk about his journey with running and how it’s helped him to become a better person physically and mentally.

Repost from Rajat Chauhan
“For the first GuessT session of Run & Bee 🐝 camp 3, we have Harsheath, finisher of 55 kms during 2019 edition of La Ultra - The High (Ladakh). He’ll talk us through how he picked up running, carried on with it even though it wasn’t natural to him. He carried on because he loved running and is now capable of comfortably running 10 kms in 40 min or 16 kms in 1hr 11min as he did yesterday.”
