Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! πΊπ
On this day, New Mexico honors the culture, traditions and history of the state's tribal nations and peoples. At UNM-Gallup, where nearly 70% of students identify as Native American, every day is Indigenous Peoples' Day.
In 2024, UNM-Gallup established a Native American Student Success Center (NASSC) to strengthen the branch's commitment to improving the well-being of all students, including those who are traditionally marginalized and underserved.
The NASSC is on hiatus as of September 2026 due to the loss of federal funding, but the center left a significant impact on UNM-Gallup and our students in a short period of time. It supported Lobos through its Emergency Assistance Program and provided many opportunities for enrichment and growth, including trips to cultural events, financial literacy workshops, guest speakers, and interactive demonstrations on crafts such as cooking, beading, ribbon skirts, and leather bracelets.
While the NASSC is on hiatus, UNM-Gallup remains committed to supporting students in the areas of food insecurity, housing insecurity, healthy living, mental health, emergency funds, cultural celebrations and awareness, academic support, and career services.
UNM-Gallup is also dedicated to re-establishing and maintaining the NASSC to accelerate student success and thus accelerate the region and the state of New Mexico as a whole.
