We were honored to welcome President Biden to Reedy Chapel AME Church, where the very first Juneteenth celebration took place, for last night’s moving service. His visit to the birthplace of Juneteenth, the holiday he made a national observance, brought powerful energy and recognition to our community. Yesterday was unforgettable for Galveston.❤️

Happy Juneteenth from Galveston Island! On June 19, 1865, Union troops led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with long overdue news, the war had ended and the enslaved were now FREE. This came two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

In 1980, Texas became the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. Then on June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed it into law as the 11th federal holiday. 💙
