SIFTING SAND: Sea Aggie’s protocols could help scientists spread beach research everywhere

Dr. Guilherme Corte, assistant professor of marine biology in the College of Marine Sciences and Maritime Studies at Texas A&M University at Galveston, is working with the Smithsonian’s Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO) to create an international sandy beach database.

Building on techniques used by Corte’s lab in Galveston, MarineGEO will provide course modules and research protocols so faculty and students across the Americas and beyond can contribute.

The wait is over. Lone Star State is finally home! A journey that began decades ago has brought Lone Star State to its homeport at the Galveston Campus where it will be used to educate and train the next generation of maritime professionals serving the blue economy.

Sea Aggie Inaugurated as Leader of the Panama Canal. Whoop! 👍

Ilya Espino de Marotta ’85 was sworn in as Panama Canal Authority administrator during a morning ceremony on Monday, Sept. 7, at the canal’s formal Administration Building. Her seven-year term begins Oct. 1.

She is the first woman to hold the post, but not the first Aggie. Alberto Alemán Zubieta ’73 led the canal for 16 years, guiding the transition from U.S. to Panamanian control.

GOOD BULL ALERT 🚨👍

What’s the first rule of the sea? To render aid.

This afternoon, crew aboard TS Lone Star State was alerted about a boater in need of assistance about 60 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Fortunately, the crew spotted the vessel shortly after and notified U.S. Coast Guard. Capt. Wade Howell ‘02 commanded the crew to stand by until their arrival, in case urgent aid was needed, and to ensure that surrounding marine traffic was aware. Thanks to USCG the occupants are now safely being transported back to port.

This is the third time that the Texas A&M Maritime Academy has served its fellow mariner community and worked with USCG for the safe return to port of a mariner in need.

Campus Update due to Tropical Storm Edouard

Texas A&M University at Galveston officials continue to closely monitor the risk for potential heavy rainfall and road flooding associated with a developing tropical storm Edouard.

At this time, campus will operate as normal on Tuesday and Wednesday. Dining services will maintain regular mealtimes.

Should conditions cause campus operations or currently scheduled events or activities to change, information will be communicated through Sea Aggie alerts.

Students, faculty and staff should continue to monitor Sea Aggie Alerts, campus email, campus social media (), and the Galveston Campus mobile app (available on App Store & Google Play) for information related to campus impacts.

What’s better than free snacks and faculty bingo at an academic department open house?

Perhaps a puppy!

A cute pooch joined the Marine & Coastal Environmental (MCES) welcoming team Aug. 27 on the third floor of the Ocean and Coastal Studies Building.

Students doted over the little dog while still finding time to mingle with faculty and fill out MCES bingo cards for a chance to win prizes.

Fall Faculty Forum kicks off historic Sea Aggie year

On the verge of a new academic year, Texas A&M University of Galveston faculty came together Friday, Aug. 21, as a force for good, ready to welcome new students and embrace historic changes on campus.

The annual Fall Faculty Forum provided opportunities to introduce new faculty, celebrate promotions, and anticipate historic milestones.

As Texas A&M University celebrates its 150th anniversary, the Galveston campus looks forward to the arrival of the newly built TS LONE STAR STATE, the opening of the Engineering Classroom and Research Building, and the groundbreaking for the Cheryl Mellenthin Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital and Educational Outreach Center.

Students painted rocks, enjoyed snacks, chatted with faculty, and toured the Sea Life Facility during a
Marine Biology Department (MARB) open house on Aug. 26 in the Ocean and Coastal Studies Building.

The painted stones, once dried, would be returned to the landscaping beds around the Academic Complex (MAIN), a sign said.

Sea Aggies Enjoy ’Night Under the Big Top’!

Students gathered around the TAMUG Clock Tower for good circus-themed fun, including games and face painting, on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Many proved too forceful when swinging a large hammer and got the puck stuck in the bell at the top of the High Striker Test of Strength.
