Hello everyone! It has been a little while now but I wanted to update about the final part of my semester abroad. Again my name is Richie Conaway and I am a music education major at Adelphi University in the Levermore Global Scholars program. Studying abroad at Kingston University was an absolutely life altering decision that I will never forget. Educationally, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to study history from a different perspective. The location of London also provided many local learning experiences for me like my visits to the British Museum, British Library, and Harry Potter Studios. International travel was also possible for me in this location through the amazing company SomewhereNew and I was able to visit Greece and Scotland towards the end of my trip. Thank you to Adelphi University, Adelphi Global, and Kingston University for this incredible experience. Kingston, I will see you soon.

Environmental responsibility knows no borders--it takes a global village to keep our planet green. Last month, Adelphi welcomed middle school students from Tsai Hsing School in Taiwan for two weeks as part of the Marine Science Summer Institute, which introduces international students to American education and culture. Under the guidance of Department of Environmental Studies faculty members Professor Beth Christensen, Ph.D., Associate Professor Jonna Coombs, Ph.D., and Visiting Assistant Professor Ruth Coffey, Ph.D., students got a crash course in the local Long Island environment. Hands-on learning was the name of the game--they experimented in Adelphi labs, took field trips to the beach, visited the American Museum of Natural History, participated in a bay cleanup event and worked with instructors to create their own plays. How do social work theory and practice differ from the United States to Japan? Students in both the Adelphi School of Social Work and Japan's Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) are finding out, thanks to an exciting new partnership. From August 1 to August 10, Adelphi hosted a week of cultural exchange as seven of our social work students acted as Adelphi Ambassadors for six social work students from Japan. The Adelphi and KGU contingents traveled into Manhattan for field visits to nonprofits--where they learned from experienced social workers making a difference in the lives of children, adults and elderly New Yorkers--and visited landmarks like the Tenement Museum, Ellis Island and the United Nations. The week culminated in a symposium on social work topics, student presentations, and a farewell dinner and talent night. The cultural exchange continues next summer, when social work faculty members Associate Professor Bradley Zodikoff, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Chrisann Newransky, Ph.D., will lead a group of Adelphi students to Japan. Adelphi is pleased to launch 16 faculty-led study abroad courses for 2018. These credit-bearing, short-term courses take place during January intersession, spring break and summer. They are an excellent way to earn Adelphi credit and study a special topic with an Adelphi professor in a new cultural context. Study ecology in Belize, art and culture in Kosovo, theatre in London or journalism in Cuba. For program descriptions and to apply, visit study-abroad.adelphi.edu.

The Center for International Education recently caught up with Katherine Fiori, Associate Professor of Psychology at Adelphi University's Derner Institute, who is on sabbatical this semester and conducting research in Germany. Here's her quick update from Berlin:

"While here in Berlin I am collaborating with a researcher at the "Deutches Zentrum fuer Altersfragen" - roughly translated as the German Center for Aging Research. We are working on several projects, including one using a large-scale longitudinal German dataset in which we are examining the differential role of declines in population on changes in social development in late life in urban and rural environments. What we're finding is that population decline predicts declines in social integration among older adults over time living in rural, but not in urban, regions of the country. This has implications for interventions that are typically developed to target psychological mechanisms, but might be better served addressing population issues at a district level. In addition, we are developing a model of social relations across the lifespan, which posits that time and energy are key resources that can explain the make-up of individuals' social networks, and that the effects of those networks on health work through key social functions, such as social support, social engagement, and social influence."

Professor Fiori- We can't wait to take classes from you in the fall!

Hello everyone! Once again, I’m Richie Conaway-a music education student in the LGS program at Adelphi studying at Kingston University in London for the semester. This last month, I had a bit of time off from courses and traveled around continental Europe by train visiting Paris, Switzerland, Germany, and ending in Amsterdam. While at my final stop, I had the chance to stay with my Dutch friend Thomas. I was also lucky to see my friend Iris as well. Both Thomas and Iris traveled with me in Up with People (a global education program focused on music that we all traveled in during my gap year). I would recommend a gap year to all students and I would be happy to share about mine with anyone interested! I also had the chance to visit Ireland which was especially poignant to me because of my heritage. The Kingston Study Abroad office is incredible in offering trip options to international students and the information they provided helped aid my travels immensely. My British Life and Culture class also provides incredible learning opportunities in the Greater London area. For example, we visited the Southall Gurdwara (a Sikh Temple) as a part of British religious study and Parliament to get better sense of their governmental structure. Also, I saw the Wicked London cast- phenomenal production. It has been a busy month and extremely rewarding! Adelphi University Levermore Global Scholars Adelphi University

Hello everybody! My name is Richie Conaway and I'm a sophomore music education major in the Levermore Global Scholars Program at Adelphi University. This semester, I am currently studying abroad at Kingston University in the London area of the United Kingdom. The experience has been incredible overall so far, both in and out of the classroom. Class structure is a bit different. Most courses only contain one assessment instead of multiple due dates, which is going to take some getting used to, but overall my courses are fascinating. It is interesting to study history courses from a different point of view than that of the United States. One of my courses is British Life & Culture, specifically designed for study abroad students here at Kingston. As part of the course, we are attending SIX field trips throughout Great Britain which is an incredible opportunity! Our first excursion was to the spectacular Windsor Castle shortly after arrival. I have also independently visited central London and experienced the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, the National Gallery, and Westminster Abbey to name a few landmarks. I've also tried delicious fish and chips as well as numerous teas and cookies, and met a lot of amazing people from all over the world. The town of Kingston is also gorgeous, and my building overlooks the beautiful River Thames! More updates to come! AU Levermore Global Scholars Program Adelphi University
