Happy Commencement Day, Class of 2026! 🎓💙

Last week, the Brewer Center for Civic Learning & Community Engagement celebrated graduating students who completed 20+ hours of service during their time at MWCC. Our Sharyn Rice Community Leadership Award recipient, Betty-Jo (pictured in 6th photo) completed over 1,000 hours alone!

These students gave their time, energy, leadership, and compassion to communities both on and off campus through volunteerism, service-learning, advocacy, mentoring, event leadership, and community partnerships. And you may have seen that signified through regalia at commencement today!

Service has the power to turn a campus into a community- and this graduating class has left a meaningful impact on ours, collectively giving over 23,000 hours in service learning and volunteerism while students at MWCC!

Congratulations to all of our graduates, award recipients, student leaders, and community changemakers. We are so proud of you and cannot wait to see what comes next. 💫

Meet the Staff Monday 👋

Say hello to Spencer, our newest Student Leader in Civic Engagement!

Spencer is part of our Gateway to College program and brings a deep commitment to making sure everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. From advocating for LGBTQ+ rights to caring about animal welfare and civic engagement, Spencer leads with compassion and purpose in everything he does.

He’s especially passionate about creating spaces where students who feel unseen in their daily lives can find belonging here at the Brewer Center- and we’re so glad he’s part of this community. (Also, future veterinarian in the making 🐾!)

We’re excited to have Spencer helping us build a more inclusive, engaged campus.

Our first RISE project has officially launched. 🌱

This week, Team Sprouting Joy- student Wayne and SLiCE Justina- presented their project to a community panel and were approved for $250 in seed funding to bring their vision to life.

Their idea: creating indoor gardening boxes for residents at Heywood Wakefield.

Rooted in thoughtful research, their project aims to:
🌿 Foster social connection
🌿 Support mental and physical well-being
🌿 Increase accessibility by growing food indoors

This was more than a presentation- it was a moment of action, collaboration, and belief in student-led change.

A huge thank you to our panelists- Wren (SLiCE), Dean Fagan Forhan, Professor George LoCascio, and Marielle Vega- for their time, insight, and support in helping bring this project forward.

As part of our pilot year of RISE, this marks the very first project to launch- and we couldn’t be more proud.

This is what it looks like when students identify a need, build a plan, and take action.

We can’t wait to see Sprouting Joy grow. 🌱

Denim Day at MWCC was powerful.

Thank you to the students, staff, faculty, community members, and partners who showed up- not just to attend, but to listen, to learn, and to stand in solidarity.

We are especially grateful to Pathways for Change, Inc. for partnering with us and hosting Denim Day at the Mount this year, and for the work they do every day to support survivors.

This event held space for truth and courage-
from Sarah’s powerful testimony,
to Katt’s spoken word piece sharing her story, to Wren and Wendy’s performance of “My Short Skirt” in both English and Spanish.

Denim Day is rooted in protest.
In 1992, an Italian court overturned a r**e conviction, claiming the survivor’s tight jeans implied consent. Wearing denim on this day is a refusal of that narrative.

What someone wears is never consent.
Consent must be clear, informed, and freely given- always.

Everyone deserves dignity.

Everyone deserves autonomy over their body.

Everyone deserves to be believed and supported.

We are proud to stand with survivors- and committed to continuing this work.

Join us tomorrow for Denim Day 💙

Wear your jeans, stand in solidarity with survivors, and help raise awareness about sexual violence and victim blaming.

Denim Day began as a global movement to challenge harmful misconceptions- and together, we continue that conversation on campus.

Our Earth Day Community Cleanup at MWCC yesterday. 🌎

MWCC students and staff spent the day along Green Street and Mathews Street, coming together to care for the spaces we all share.

By the end of the cleanup, the amount collected exceeded a full truck bed- a powerful reminder of both the need and the impact of collective action.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and contributed to this effort!

Last week, we hosted a Social Justice & Advocacy Fair which marked the conclusion of this semester’s Community Organizing Workshop Series at MWCC.

After six weeks of building knowledge, skills, and strategies for community change, the fair created space for students to connect directly with local organizations and advocacy efforts.

What stood out most was the level of engagement- tables stayed active, conversations were ongoing, and attendees took time to ask questions, explore resources, and build connections.

Thank you to our community partners and everyone who contributed to a meaningful and impactful close to the series!
