The Inquiry Initiative is transforming science and math at Southwestern University. Faculty throughout the Natural Sciences are incorporating the process of inquiry into introductory classes and laboratories, and a new cadre of specially-trained peer mentors, the SCI Guides, will help students maximize their learning and critical thinking skills. Learning through discovery will continue for studen

ts who conduct research with faculty mentors in SCOPE, the Inquiry Initiative’s summer research program. Through intentional, evidence-based practices, we are building an even stronger and more successful scientific community here at Southwestern University. The Inquiry Initiative supports Southwestern’s Natural Sciences in generating a creative, accomplished, and diverse pool of Southwestern student scientists. INQUIRY + INCLUSION
The Inquiry Initiative is dedicated to equal opportunity and creating an inclusive learning environment in the science and math programs at Southwestern. We are eager to celebrate all students’ accomplishments and to promote student success with an understanding of the importance of diversity in the science classroom and the greater science community.

Wow! We're so grateful for the support SCOPE has received so far. If 20 more donations are made toward SCOPE (any dollar amount counts!), another $3500 will be gifted to the program which will fund an additional research student next summer. We're also very fortunate that an anonymous donor is matching every dollar gifted to our research program 😊

SCOPE gives our science and math students the unique and important opportunity to engage in collaborative, authentic research with faculty every summer.

This week's "Choose Your Southwestern Challenge" will enhance the research experience for our students. Help us meet our goal! Find out how you can make a difference: https://www.givecampus.com/schools/SouthwesternUniversity/choose-your-southwestern-challenge/?a=419839

Shoutout to these accomplished SCOPErs!

Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Dr. Schrum, has had two publications co-authored with students accepted to the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference taking place this summer. Both publications are based on research done last summer as part of SCOPE.

"Comparing Direct and Indirect Encodings Using Both Raw and Hand-Designed Features in Tetris," a full paper written with Lauren Gillespie and alumna Gabriela Gonzalez, will be presented as a talk at the conference. "Balancing Selection Pressures, Multiple Objectives, and Neural Modularity to Coevolve Cooperative Agent Behavior," an extended abstract written with Alex Rollins will be presented as a poster.

Our SCOPE students are amazing! 22 SU students attended the Texas Academy of Science (TAS) meeting earlier this month, where they gave 4 oral presentations and presented 12 posters in areas including Conservation Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Cell/Molecular Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Physics, Systematics and Evolution, Freshwater Science, and Science Education. Several students and alumni received awards. Link for details: http://bit.ly/2nanoxI
