Description: Benefits, challenges, and mission details about the first 4G/LTE network to be deployed on the lunar surface.

Your Presenter: Luis Maestro graduated in Mobile Communications (MSc) from Miguel Hernandez University, Spain. He started his career in Nokia in 2007 as an external radio researcher in Aalborg, Denmark. In 2009, Luis became a member and, later in 2011, Head of Nokia Innovation Centre (NICE) in Madrid working closely with different customer innovation labs on new concepts and solutions for cellular networks. In 2013, Luis moved to Dallas, Texas as Head of Nokia Smart Labs, America and focused on smartphone and wireless network interactions and product innovation. In late 2014, he joined Nokia Technology & Innovation, later Nokia Bell Labs, and has been leading different innovation programs in the areas of ultra-compact, rapid deployable and mission-critical wireless communications. Luis is currently the Principal Investigator for the NASA tipping point program aiming at deploying the first 4G/LTE network on the lunar surface in late 2024.

The Interplanetary Chapter has recently published a report: "Solar System Internet Architecture and Governance", developed by our Architecture and Governance Working Group (AWG). This report reflects our analysis of governing principles we believe are necessary for extending communication networks across the solar system starting from the Moon and on to Mars. Numerous recognized experts in space policy, space communication protocols, and Internet governance made significant contributions to this report.

As the world makes rapid advances in space exploration and commercialization, we believe the time to explore governance in space is now. Our study focused on governance practices necessary to promote a commonly shared communication network in space. Those practices are based in part on lessons learned from the evolution of the terrestrial Internet and upon our recognition of new governance needs driven by unique operational requirements of a collaborative Solar System Internet.

The report is long, but well worth the read. You may access the document here:

Presenter: Dr. Preston F. Marshall
Engineering Director and Principle Wireless Architect for Google

This talk will discuss the role of the underlying IPN protocols (Delay Tolerant Networking, or DTN) and how this protocol has attractive features to a much wider range of applications. Advocating for the broader adoption of DTN would have the effect of bringing additional implementations, adoption, interoperability, and innovation to DTN, and thus to IPN. Making IPN one of the "edged" in broader DTN networks of networks can bridge the gap between planetary and interplanetary networks.

Interplanetary Networking 25 Year Retrospective Video

IPNSIG Vice President Scott Burleigh has created a look backward at the last 25 years of the development of IPN technologies that place us on the cusp of expanding Internet connectivity to the moon and beyond in the not-too-distant future. This informative and engaging video starts with the very earliest meetings in 1998 through the present-day to include DTN in all NASA and ESA lunar missions.
Many thanks to Scott for his excellent work! The video is available on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/T8e98nyQj_c.
