📘 New book alert!

Amin Nozariasbmarz, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Rowan University, is the author of Thermoelectric Materials for Wearable Electronics: Body Heat Harvesting. The book explores materials, modeling and technologies that use body heat to help power wearable electronics for applications such as continuous health monitoring.

The cover illustration was created by Ryan Penn, senior designer for the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering and adjunct professor of graphic design in Rowan’s College of the Arts.

📬 Postcards from the Field: Alexis Allen

Mechanical Engineering student Alexis Allen ’26 spent the summer interning with the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the Auxiliary Steam Turbine division, where she helped improve safety equipment aboard Navy vessels.

From analyzing piping system stresses and redesigning components to assisting with ship inspections and repairs, Alexis applied skills from the classroom while gaining hands-on experience with AutoCAD, engineering drawings and stress analysis.

Her advice to other students pursuing internships? Be yourself and be confident in the skills you already possess.

Congratulations to Maria Maione, an electrical and computer engineering major in the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, on receiving the highly competitive SMART Scholarship!

The award provides full tuition, an annual stipend, a paid summer internship and a pathway to a civilian engineering career at the Naval Surface Warfare Center – Philadelphia Division.

📬 Postcards from the Field: Kelechi Okpara

Civil Engineering student Kel Okpara ’28 spent the summer putting his engineering skills to work with the Rowan University Sustainable Facilities Center as an Engineering Assessor.

Kel traveled across New Jersey to inspect and assess more than 20 New Jersey Army National Guard buildings, documenting building conditions, collecting data and identifying facilities most in need of repair. His work helps support funding decisions to restore and maintain military armories across the state.

Along the way, Kel gained hands-on experience with BUILDER SMS and Autodesk Revit while learning just how collaborative and active a career in civil engineering can be.

Mechanical Engineering student Ransben Addy ’27 spent the summer interning with DCO Energy, supporting the design team on a Combined Heat and Power plant project for Middlesex College.

From reviewing engineering drawings and equipment specifications to applying concepts from his Rowan thermodynamics courses, Ransben gained a firsthand look at how design decisions shape the operation of complex energy systems.

His advice to other students? Be reliable, easy to work with and don’t underestimate the value of the experience you already bring to the table.

🔬 Ph.D. Spotlight: Sk Md Imdadul Islam

Meet Sk Md Imdadul Islam, a Ph.D. candidate in Civil Engineering at Rowan University, whose research is addressing two major challenges: plastic waste and aging transportation infrastructure.

Imdad’s work, under supervision of Dr. Yusuf Mehta, explores how recycled waste plastics can be incorporated into asphalt pavements to create more durable, sustainable roads and military airfields while reducing plastic waste in landfills. Funded by the U.S. Department of War, his research could help improve pavement performance in cold regions and support future infrastructure needs.

His research excellence has earned recognition through Rowan University’s Graduate Research Day, including the 2026 Best Poster Award and 2025 People’s Choice Award. With more than 100 citations and thousands of research reads, his work in sustainable materials is making an impact worldwide.

Beyond the lab, Imdad serves as Vice President of Rowan’s Engineering Graduate Student Association, mentors undergraduate students and contributes to the engineering community through organizations including ASCE and TSPE.
