College of DuPage Field and Experiential Learning/Study Abroad The WORLD is our classroom. Be a fan and find out where we're going and how YOU can join us! Classes are experience based/faculty facilitated.

Field and Experiential Learning is an academic program at COD offering credit courses that combine classroom work with empirical field experience. The instructor's role is largely that of a facilitator who helps learning take place. Courses are grouped into four categories: Weekend and Outdoor, Natural Science, Social Science and Cultural, and International. Classes may be taken in any order or co

mbination. Some students enroll to earn credit toward a degree or certificate; others are interested in learning about or visiting a particular destination. Still others are interested in learning outdoor or wilderness skills. You are welcome, whatever your interests.

This summer, COD students traveled to New York City with Fashion Studies Professor Nelson Cantada, to explore and learn from businesses at the center of the U.S. fashion industry.

During this field studies course, they visited the iconic Garment District, got a behind the scenes look at companies like Bernstein Display, Create-A-Marker, Merchant Coterie, Suit Supply, and had the opportunity to meet with designers Anthony Luciano and Paula Varsalona, to learn about their careers, creative processes, and the industry itself.

There may be no better way to experience Europe than from the seat of a bicycle.

Earlier this month, we pedaled from Innsbruck to Salzburg, following rivers, cycling through alpine valleys, charming villages, historic towns, and some of Austria’s most spectacular mountain scenery. Along the way, we enjoyed local culture, sampled regional cuisine, and experienced the landscape at a pace that allowed us to truly connect with the places we visited.

Traveling by bicycle transforms the journey into the destination. Every climb is rewarded with a view, every stop becomes an opportunity for discovery, and every mile creates lasting memories. From the Tyrolean Alps to the streets of Salzburg, this ride reminded us why cycling is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the world.

We have a last-minute opening in our "Hiking the World’s Wonders in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks" class from July 12 to 18. Reach out if you're interested.

Behold the largest tree in the world and peer into a canyon deeper than the Grand Canyon at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. These two adjacent parks hold ancient forests, sculpted rock outcroppings, snowcapped mountains, and wildflower meadows. This is where the giant sequoia, a towering tree that grows up to 300 feet tall and can live 3,000 years, calls home. Hikes and pace will be easy/moderate. Expect to hike three to six miles a day over uneven terrain. Class: June 24 (7 to 8:50 p.m.). Field Study: July 12 to 18. Fee: $1,898 (includes air/ground transportation, lodging, and entrance fees). Our group just returned from "Food & Wine Passport: France", a 14-day food-focused study abroad experience through Provence, Nice, Lyon, and Paris.

Beth Lopez, a COD Culinary Arts student, shared her experience:

"An abroad trip to France with the culinary school at College of DuPage is a once in a lifetime experience! Two weeks of traveling through the south of France and ending in Paris, our group experienced hands-on workshops and guided tours gaining incredible insights on olive oil, wine, cheese (especially goat cheese), truffle hunting, fruit confit, Lyonnaise cuisine, chocolate making, charcuterie, and jam making. We ate incredible food, learned from Michelin star chefs and of course saw amazing sites. An exquisite experience, in a beautiful country with a significant influence on gastronomy!"

This course will be open for registration on Friday, June 5 at midnight.

Kyoto, Japan: Blooming Cherry in Modernity

Join us on a 10-day exploration of Japan to examine its traditional cultural values while visiting major parks, gardens, temples, shrines and castles. Observe the beauty of the Japanese cherry blossoms (sakura), as well as traditional theater and ceremonies while participating in a variety of cultural activities in the Kyoto area. As this traditional setting plays a very important role in the new era, "Reiwa", you can explore both ancient and modern culture at the same time in Japan's former capital city. Participants must be comfortable walking several miles a day at a brisk pace.

Classes: March 9 and 23 (5:30 to 7:50 p.m.).
Field Study: March 26 to April 4.
Fee: $3,495 (includes air, most domestic transportation, accommodations with breakfast, entrance fees, performance tickets and cultural activities).

Miami MAX

Investigate how artificial intelligence, generative design, mixed reality, and emerging platforms are reshaping design practice and extending historical trajectories. This course includes an immersive study trip to Adobe MAX, Miami, where students participate in keynotes, workshops, and exhibitions, engaging directly with designers and technologies shaping the future of the field while contextualizing these experiences within graphic design history and theory.

Virtual Classes: Nov. 6 and 16 (9 to 11:50 a.m.)
Field Study: Nov. 9 to 12

New Classes Opening!
This course will be open for registration on Friday, June 5 at midnight.

Yosemite National Park: Granite Giants in Winter

Silence Experience the magic of winter in Yosemite National Park on this unforgettable snowshoeing and hiking adventure. Journey beneath the towering granite walls of El Capitan and take in the iconic silhouette of Half Dome as snow transforms the park into a peaceful alpine wonderland. Witness some of the tallest waterfalls in the world as the High Sierra snowpack begins its seasonal transition to spring, hike through the glacially carved landscape of Hetch Hetchy Valley, explore the high-elevation winter terrain of Badger Pass, and trek among the majestic sequoias of Mariposa Grove, home to massive, 20-story trees that have stood for thousands of years. Along the way, participants will examine the natural processes that shaped Yosemite Valley while developing practical outdoor skills and a deeper appreciation for protected landscapes and wilderness stewardship.

Field Study: Feb. 28 to Mar. 6.
