College of DuPage Learning Communities

College of DuPage Learning Communities The page for the Learning Communities program at College of DuPage

Learning communities are unique, innovative learning experiences which typically involve students enrolling as a cohort in two or more courses connected by a common theme. Learning communities can be as simple as two courses linked by a common topic to fully integrated programs of study. In a learning community, students have greater opportunities to make connections with their professors and clas

smates and, in some cases, with the community beyond the college. They also have the opportunity to make connections between the subject matter of their coursework in ways that enhance and deepen learning. Ever wonder about where our food comes from and what impact food production has on our environment? Then consider enrolling in this interdisciplinary seminar which combines Environmental Biology and Film Studies to explore food systems to understand human societies, cultures, and our relationships with the environment. You'll examine food production and consumption choices, consider questions of food access, hunger, and poverty, and explore the impacts of globalization on food. As a class project, you'll envision and map out a sustainable food system that offers solutions for feeding ourselves in a way that respects ecology, values diversity, builds resilient communities, and is based on social justice.
