I began photographing my mother in December, 2009 as a way to process my feelings towards a mother I had never truly known and hoped by photographing her, I could bring closure to an open wound I had my entire life. In the process, I grew to love my mother and this project, He Threw the Last Punch Too Hard, was born.

When I was 9, my mother left our family after falling in love with another man. The man she left us for turned out to be violent: he beat her so badly that she suffered permanent brain damage and had to be moved into an assisted living facility at the age of forty-one, where she lived for 35 years. The last eight years she lived at one of the best facilities in the country. My mother was planning to attending this show but she died on March 18, 2023 at 1:12am. I was holding her hand, telling her I loved her and that she taught me what mattered: love, forgiveness and compassion.

Alumni Artist Spotlight: Adrienne Kinsella

My practice focuses on drawing and oil painting, with an emphasis on figuration. My work examines relationships between interior and exterior, whether depicting physical spaces or implying internal landscapes. I am exploring trauma, safety, and what we choose to conceal or reveal to others. The recurring presence of jello serves as a metaphor for futile attempts to suspend time. A melting, monstrous concoction, technically edible, yet made of the unthinkable, with interior and exterior simultaneously visible. My drawings are rendered with colored pencil on vellum, a semi-transparent substrate that echoes themes of transience and the dichotomies of public vs. private...

Iris is an LA based artist, muralist, sculptor and designer. Iris celebrates the integration of street art, graffiti, fine art, advertising, iconography and cultural criticism in her artwork. She first gained recognition for her creative installation work in Las Vegas, California and around the US designing trade show events in 1996. Her works are often large, colorful, optimistic and joyful.

Iris studied graphic design in Vancouver, BC and began her professional art career as creative director in the telecommunications, entertainment and gaming industries in the 1990’s. Iris earned her AA at Pierce College and BFA at CSUN where she explored multiple mediums and discovered her passion for public art, collaboration and community engagement.

Iris incorporates her beloved theme of peace, love, kindness, togetherness, and inclusion into her public art, murals, sculptures, paintings, classes and group shows, while offering the viewer a safe space to be content. Her works have appeared on public and private walls around Los Angeles and Florida, on clothing brands, at local shelters, bridge housing communities, festivals, pop-ups, private parties, in art galleries and on the side of freeways. Iris is driven by her passion for our shared experience as a global, local and familial community...

White reflects all color. Look at a “white” wall and concentrate.
You will see browns, blues, yellows, magentas, and infinite shades of reality.

All colors absorb light reflecting a single hue back to the observer, except black. Black absorbs all light. It rarely occurs in nature, and only then in minerals. I never use black paint, instead I use mixtures of umber, acra and phalo blue which look dark, but unlike black draws the viewer into the painting.

In my work, I make details as intrinsic a part of the painting as the focal point. By emphasizing the details that form the whole, I emphasize the mood. Since emotion is shaped by the totality, my pieces focus on emotion. And life is neither emotionally, nor visually simple. ..
