What can the plants people cultivate, consume and exchange teach us about society?

For Professor Julia Sarreal of Arizona State University's School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, that question opens new ways of understanding the past — and thinking about the future.

Her interdisciplinary research examines relationships between people and plants, including her work on the history of yerba mate. Plant materials can offer insights into historical resources and bookmaking, while Indigenous crops adapted to the arid Southwest can offer lessons about climate adaptation.
