Q: Is there a particular piece of media — book, movie, poem — which inspired you to start writing in the first place?
A: When I was in 6th grade, my English teacher showed us a video of Kanye West's "Homecoming" and broke down his lyrics and various other rap lyrics as if they were poetry. My parents already raised me on rap, but I would rap these songs with these lyrics and not really consider what they were saying. "Homecoming" was one big metaphor about the Windy City of Chicago and how it had treated West, and for the longest time I had no idea. In that moment, I realized that I wanted to do that same thing. I wanted to provide a message in a way that people could feel it.Â
Q: Who is a writer who inspires you?
A: A writer that has always inspired me is Maya Angelou. She was a black woman that did spoken word, and was able to capture so many life experiences into her poems and still be the driving force that she was. When she passed away in 2014, I was devastated, but I still listen to her poem "Still I Rise" to remind myself that even after loss, depression, judgement, all of the bad stuff, we still rise out of it.Â
Q: What topics, themes, and genres are you drawn to, and why?
A: I'm drawn to a lot of different themes, but I was say the most kind of have to do with my mental health, politics, growing up, societal standards, pretty much anything that's at the forefront of my mind. I write about these things because not only are they relatable, but I also find an urge to spread awareness about some of these topics, and tell people my story in a way that's not just telling it how it is, but showing it.
