What a way to begin a semester in the Florida Keys!

During the first two days of Goshen College’s fall Marine Biology Semester, our students had the opportunity to join biologists from the Inwater Research Group (IRG) during permitted in-water sea turtle research around Long Key.

IRG biologists are collaborating with Goshen College to study juvenile and subadult sea turtles around Long Key and the Zane Grey Canal. As part of the project, permitted researchers captured and measured turtles, assessed health, installed flipper and PIT tags, deployed acoustic tags on selected animals, and installed receivers that will record movements of tagged turtles through the area over the coming months.

Working alongside the IRG team gave our students an extraordinary opportunity to see professional sea turtle research in action and to participate in field activities. Students were able to observe research techniques, learn how sea turtles are measured and standardized health assessments are conducted, discuss turtle ecology and conservation directly with working biologists, and contribute to the broader field effort supporting this project.

Experiences like this are exactly what makes a semester at Goshen College’s J.N. Roth Marine Biology Station unique: students arrived in the Florida Keys and, within their first 48 hours, were already learning alongside scientists conducting active conservation research in the waters surrounding their new home.

We are grateful to the Inwater Research Group for welcoming our students into the field and for helping us learn more about the sea turtles using Long Key.

Marine turtle research conducted pursuant to NMFS ESA Permit No. 21169 and FWC MTP 204.

Peace Talks is an inaugural speech contest where conviction takes center stage. As one of five storytelling projects from Goshen College's new media hub, More Than Just Stories, Peace Talks is an annual public speaking event for young people to cultivate leadership through faith-based speaking and storytelling about peace and justice.

This year, five students from Mennonite/Anabaptist colleges will compete on the same stage for the first time. Goshen College will host the Peace Talks contest on September 19 at Umble Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Say hello to More Than Just Stories, a new media hub made possible through a five-year storytelling grant to Goshen College from Lilly Endowment, Inc. Five projects, one mission: telling stories where faith, justice, gratitude and courage meet. This page is just the start. More stories, more pages and more events to come!

Please join and follow us as we kick off this exciting initiative!

More Than Just Stories, a media organization founded by Goshen College and financed by Lilly Endowment Inc., manages five innovative storytelling projects.

🎙️ Just Stories – a podcast about the places where justice and faith intersect and sometimes collide

🎙️ The Gratitude Letters – a podcast built on the conviction that it’s never too late – and always a good time – to say thank you

🎤 Peace Talks – a speech contest where convictions take center stage

🎬 “The Inheritance” – a documentary film that follows the journeys of courageous people as they pursue a spirituality that feels worthy of being called Christian

🌱 Climate Commons – a storytelling conference that highlights how people of faith are confronting climate change

Lilly Endowment awarded Goshen College a five-year, $5 million grant in 2025 through its National Storytelling Initiative on Christian Faith and Life.

This page is just the beginning. We’re building a full home for all five projects — with stories, more pages, and a few surprises along the way. Stay tuned!
