Fighting Hawk pride stretches all the way to San Diego, California! đź’šđź–¤

A special shoutout to Jamie Pekras and Kat Culbertson, co-teachers of a fourth-grade classroom at Integrity Charter School in San Diego, whose students have adopted the University of North Dakota as their university!

College dreams don't begin with an application. They begin when young students see themselves as future college students and start imagining what's possible.

We couldn't be more excited to welcome these fourth graders into the Fighting Hawk family. More than 1,500 miles may separate us, but you've got a whole university in Grand Forks cheering you on!

Who knows? There may be a few future Fighting Hawks in that classroom!

🌿 What a wonderful start to fall!

Graduate Research and Teaching Assistants Leisha Lunnie and Esnart Mfune (OLEE & Learning Gardens) welcomed Dr. Sonja Brandt's TL324 (Integrating the Arts in the Elementary Classroom) students for a hands-on field trip around our beautiful campus. Students explored an elementary-focused lesson, went on a nature walk to gather materials, and turned their finds into beautiful nature collages back in the classroom. 🍂🎨

The excitement was contagious — students left with new ideas for weaving nature and the arts into their future classrooms!

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

A senior in Public Health Education and Psychology, Asheley Lefors transferred to the University of North Dakota from a two-year ND college because of the psychology program opportunities. However, she quickly learned that Public Health Education had an "emphasis on health equity and creating opportunities for people to learn about health choices that are important to them."

Asheley's favorite part of the program is the professors. She has felt their genuine interest in her and how to help her achieve her future career goals. "They make learning fun and encourage students to connect what we are learning in the class to what is happening in the world."

Beyond the classroom, Asheley is very involved. She is the North Dakota Board President for PFLAG while volunteering with the Community Uplift Program in Fargo and the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention Minot Chapter. Asheley is also a current member on CEHD's Student Council.

"I would encourage anyone with an interest in helping others to take a course in Public Health. This is a professional field that has something for everyone. If you're not sure what Public Health is, take a look around you. The quality of the air you breathe - Public Health. The fire and safety codes to which the room you're in was built - Public Health. The knowledge you have on the importance of brushing your teeth, eating fiber, covering your cough, or wearing a seatbelt - are all Public Health! Public Health is everywhere and touches everyone."

To hear more from Asheley, read her post on the CEHD blog, "The Learning Curve".

Rooting and Connecting: Celebrating Year One of the KUA Initiative

“Táku owas’iηa maka akan yukaη kin hena wótakuye uηkitawapi naka, héuη awaηwicuηkiyakapi k’a awaηuηyakapi.”

“The skies, mountains, valleys, waterways, birds, and animals are all our relatives.”
Dakota phrase by Wambdi Koyag Mani & Joey Bird

This teaching grounded the first year of collaboration between the KUA Initiative and Indigenous educators from rural tribal schools serving the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota and the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate in South Dakota. Throughout the year, the KUA Initiative centered relationships, teacher voice, and responsive professional learning, creating opportunities for educators to strengthen their practice through culturally grounded experiences connected to identity, well-being, language, culture, land, and community.

The KUA Initiative is led through Drs. Renuka de Silva and Elizabeth Suazo-Flores, along with PhD students Md Amanual Islam, Christian Fumey, and Tionge Matangula. They each bring passion and expertise to the program and will collect data as the three year initiative continues.

Every project has a story. In this three-part series, we’ll dive into the what, the who, and the why behind the KUA Initiative.

Labeled “non-college-bound.” Became a professor. Collaborated with NASA. 🚀

Professor Jesse Rhoades kicked off CEHD’s new faculty speaker series, The Lecture, by sharing the unexpected path that led him from early academic struggles to a career in biomechanics and kinesiology.

Spoiler alert: the naysayers didn’t get the final word.

Design. Build. Test. Try again. đź’§

Late last month, CEER faculty, UND pre-service teachers, and the Northeast Education Services Cooperative joined students in grades 3–12 at Four Winds Community School for two days of hands-on engineering through its 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school program.

The challenge? Design water filtration systems that could turn cloudy water clear. Through creativity, teamwork, and persistence, every group succeeded! Students then presented their designs and explained how learning from what didn’t work helped them build something that did.

We’re excited to partner with Four Winds students for more engineering adventures this year!

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

Luke Silvernale is a graduate student earning a master's degree in Athletic Administration & Coaching with a Sports Leadership certificate. His love for football, and sports in general, motivated him to be in this program. "Building a career in sports would be awesome because I would be doing something I love."

One of his favorite parts of the Athletic Administration & Coaching program is the critical thinking it forces. "I love a lot of the assignments that ask me 'what would you do' type questions. They make me reassess my opinions and think of how my actions will affect many different facets of athletics."

Brought to UND because of football, Luke has appreciated his time with the team "because I get to learn from great leaders every day." He participates in a bible study at the Newman Center with some of his teammates and other athletes, and he enjoys the Holiday Magic for Markus community service opportunity led through the football program. "I've really enjoyed all the relationships I've built in Grand Forks. Even though I'm from Michigan, I feel at home at UND."

Let's make sure to cheer loud for Luke, the other CEHD student-athletes, and student-musicians, as they help make Homecoming full of UND pride!

A packed house for “Mr. UND”—and a proud moment for CEHD! 💚

Students, faculty, staff, and community members filled the Memorial Union’s Social Stairs on Sept. 30 to hear CEHD alumnus Dr. Bob Boyd speak at the 18:83 series.

During his 33 years of service to UND, Boyd championed student wellness and helped make the campus Wellness Center a reality. His talk centered on the people behind the accomplishments, sharing stories and a reminder that leadership begins with valuing people, regardless of their title or position.

The celebration continued as CEHD’s GRO.UND Nature-Based Learning Experiences received the Healthy UND Champion Award that bears Boyd’s name! Championed by Drs. Josh and Cheryl Hunter, GRO.UND connects learners of all ages with nature through hands-on discovery, curiosity, and exploration.

Thank you, Dr. Boyd, for your inspiring example, and congratulations to GRO.UND! 🌱
