Mark your calendars for Hekman's first event of the semester: Meet Your Public Libraries! Next week Wednesday from 11:30am-1:30pm, we're inviting you to stop by the 3rd floor of Hekman and meet our friends from the Grand Rapids Public Library and Kent District Library. They have such amazing collections and services, which are not only available freely to all who live locally but also all Calvin students on-campus! 📚😃📚 Service Learning will also be here to share how you can ride The Rapid public busses to get to nearby GRPL and KDL branches. We're so looking forward to this event, and we hope to see you there!

New display for September has Books for Back to School season! 📚🎒👩🏼‍🏫 Come check out some of these great titles or find more in our online collection. Also, don't sleep on the library when it comes to finding books for class - although Hekman doesn't collect textbooks (you still have to buy or rent those elsewhere), there may be library copies available for other titles on your required reading lists, so why not search here first and find out?

It's the first day of classes for Fall 2026, and after a quiet summer, the 3rd floor of the library is looking lively again! Welcome back to school, Calvin undergrads, and back to Hekman Library - we're ready to take on the new semester with you!

Hekman is excited for everyone to return to campus, including new incoming students! 🎒📚🤗If you're new to Calvin, be sure to stop by and explore the library to find all the amazing services and resources available to you:

✅️ huge collection of books for class and for fun
✅️ librarians to consult for research help
✅️ access to millions of research sources online
✅️ study spaces for quiet and group work

You'll also find many other offices and services in the Hekman building, like Calvin Rhetoric Center and Peet's Coffee, so we hope You'll find plenty of reasons to come to the library this semester!

What's been happening at Hekman this summer? Here's our highlights:

⭐️ Journal moving project: Hekman student team moved hundreds of boxes of old bound periodicals into the library's compact storage space as part of a long-awaited shifting project on the 4th floor. Their amazing hard work will open up much needed space for our growing academic collection while still allowing library users to access these old materials!
⭐️ Rec Reading refresh: Another student worker project focused on making the recreational reading collection more attractive, replacing a number of old titles with new selections, adding genre stickers for more browsability, and creating more display space. We hope you'll come check it out!
⭐️ Food truck days: Hekman Library once again managed to bring food trucks to give hungry folks on campus more lunch options over the summer. We all loved the pizza and tacos from El Jalapeño and Around Baking!
⭐️ Entrada day at Hekman: Entrada students visited Hekman as part of their on-campus program this summer to see what the college library is like - we hope you had as much fun as we did with our scavenger hunt and book game activitites!

Here's a quick Outlook on Library Hours: Until the end of this month, Hekman is still in summer schedule (open 8am-5pm weekdays) and then, on August 31, we will switch to regular semester hours, staying open later in the evenings as university classes kick off. Please also be aware that Hekman will be closed on Labor Day, September 7.
