โœจ Today, GVSU honors Juneteenth โ€” the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom, marking the true end of slavery in the United States. May we use this day to celebrate resilience, acknowledge history, and continue the work toward justice and equality. Freedom is a journey, and we walk it together๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒˆ Pride Month is a time to celebrate love, authenticity, and the strength that comes from embracing one another for who we are.

On June 3, the Lakers kicked off Pride Month with Pride by the Pond, a special celebration that brought our community together through fun, learning, and meaningful conversations about the LGBTQ+ community. The event highlighted the importance of inclusion, respect, and creating spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported.

As Pride Month continues, we remain committed to fostering a culture of belonging and celebrating the diversity that makes our community stronger. Together, we honor the voices, stories, and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals today and every day.

Happy Pride Month! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’œ

๐ŸŒฟโœจ Week 3: Nature & Community Night at Garfield Park โœจ๐Ÿค

Week 3 of Story Time in the Park is almost here, and this Tuesday, June 16th from 6:30 to 8:00pm, Garfield Park will come alive with the spirit of nature, community, and summertime joy. Families and neighbors are invited to gather for an evening that blends learning, laughter, and connection.

As we celebrate Nature and Community Night, guests can enjoy free books to spark young imaginations, ice cream to keep everyone cool, and a special guest reader who will bring the magic of storytelling to life. ๐Ÿš€โœจ Curiosity and creativity were on full display at the Detroit TRIO STEAM Summit at Michigan Central! โœจ๐Ÿš€

Students from University Prep High Schools in Detroit explored virtual reality, sustainability research and collaborative problem-solving last month during the TRIO Upward Bound Detroit STEAM Summit at Michigan Central. The experience was part of Project SustAIn: Innovating Today, Sustaining Tomorrow, an Impact 30-supported initiative expanding access to STEAM and AI learning opportunities for first-generation students.

The summit brought together hands-on learning experiences designed to introduce students to STEAM fields through emerging technologies and real-world applications. Students rotated through experiences led by REP4ยฎ, Grand Valleyโ€™s IT Innovation + Research Team and Detroit-based Ecotek Lab , a science research organization dedicated to supporting future scientists. TRIO students from GVSU-authorized charter schools work gathered at Michigan Central for a day of activities centered on STEAM projects.

โ€œThe virtual reality was the most interesting thing I learned, that you can take the things you make in virtual reality and print them into real things in the real world,โ€ said Malcolm Williams, a University Prep student.

Recently, Teacher Education celebrated more than 200 graduating teacher interns at our Pinning Ceremony. Students from the Birthโ€“Kindergarten, Elementary, Secondary, and Graduate Teacher Certification programs were recognized and presented with their apple pins as they take the next step in their journey as professional educators.

A special thank you to student speakers Pamela Madrigal, Hadley Halterman, and Brianna Miller (Zukowski) for sharing inspiring reflections and words of encouragement with their fellow graduates.

One particularly heartwarming moment came as Pamela addressed her classmates while her daughter, Leilani, cheered her on from the audience in the arms of Dr. Christine Kenney. โค๏ธ

We are proud of all our graduating interns and look forward to the impact they will make in classrooms and communities for years to come. Congratulations, Class of 2026! ๐ŸŽโœจ
