We can't let National Mascot Day go by without celebrating our very own Sparky!

While the latest Sparky made its big debut in February 2025, the name actually has roots in Kirtland history. Back in March 2010, Kirtland nursing student Kathy Gibson submitted the winning name "Sparky" for the College's redesigned Firebird athletic logo and mascot.

Fast forward to today, and Sparky has truly come to life. He is definitely fiery, a little mischievous, incredibly funny, and always proud to represent Kirtland. Whether he is cheering on our athletes or bringing energy to campus events, Sparky embodies the true Firebird spirit.

Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Elizabeth Kent

This Foundation Friday, we are proud to recognize Elizabeth Kent, a student of the Cardiac Sonography Program here at Kirtland Community College. This past weekend, Elizabeth and her fellow classmates received their pins at the Cardiac Sonography Pinning Ceremony. During her time at Kirtland, Elizabeth has been the recipient of the Kirtland Biggby Scholarship, the Otto and Martha Krauss Health Sciences Scholarship, and a two-time recipient of the Kirtland Foundation Scholarship. Congratulations Elizabeth on this incredible achievement!

At Kirtland Community College, community isn’t just part of our name… it’s at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we are absolutely thrilled to both return as a sponsor for Ga***rd’s Alpenfest, and to introduce you to our 2026 Alpenfest Queen Candidate, Esther Streifel!

Esther is a perfect example of the incredible local talent driving our community forward.
She is currently studying cosmetology right here at Kirtland, balancing her dedication to her studies with a dream of one day owning her own local salon.

When she isn’t mastering her craft or out in the community, you can find Esther baking delicious treats or enjoying Northern Michigan’s beautiful waters while fishing.

If crowned Alpenfest Queen, Esther wants to give right back to the community that raised her. Her goal is to organize a fun outdoor event that gets local kids outside, active, and experiencing the wonderful outdoor opportunities Ga***rd has to offer.

As a proud partner of the Ga***rd community, Kirtland Community College is honored to sponsor Esther. We are so excited to cheer her on throughout this year’s competition!
