🚁🔥 GIS with a Purpose! 🗺️

What a great day of hands-on learning and community impact! 🙌 Students from several of our GIS courses headed to Monument Fire District to see how drones support firefighting operations and helped collect data to update fire hydrant locations.

📍 Why does accurate mapping matter? Every second counts in an emergency! Accurate fire hydrant locations help first responders find critical water sources faster, protecting people, homes, and communities. ❤️🏡

Our students are putting their GIS skills to work on real-world challenges and making a difference beyond the classroom.

🚁 Geography in action! 📸
Two of our Intro to Drones students, Tommy Medina and Jordan Zink, took their new skills into the field this weekend to support Dearfield Day 2026 celebrating the 115th anniversary of Dearfield, Colorado.
Using a sUAS (drone), Tommy and Jordan captured aerial photos and video of the event and historic Dearfield buildings while gaining real-world experience in:
🛰️ UAS operations
📍 Aerial imagery & mapping
🌎 Fieldwork & data collection
🤝 Community-engaged geography
But this experience was about more than drones. Being at Dearfield gave our students an opportunity to learn more about the history and experiences of Black Americans in the American West and the important contributions they made to Colorado and American history.
We love seeing our students take what they learn in the classroom and put geography to work in the real world! 💛💙
A huge thank you to the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center for the opportunity, and to the University of Northern Colorado Department of Geography, GIS & Sustainability for supporting hands-on learning with our UAS program.

We're recruiting 5 student fellows from ANY major to join this one-year program focused on the many ways water shapes our lives.

As a fellow, you'll:
💙 Conduct research on a water-related topic
📅 Attend monthly meetings
🎤 Go to 3 water conferences (at no cost!)
🤝 Learn from water professionals
🌎 Build your professional network
💰 Receive a $1,000 stipend

🌍✨ Get crafty and eco-friendly! Join us for a fun Map Craft event where old maps get a new life. Whether you’re making art, gifts, or something totally unique, this is your chance to repurpose and create! 🗺️✂️ We have several crafts planned (map flowers, magnets, 3D stars, garland, and map ornaments) with instructions, but feel free to grab some items from the thrift store to decorate with maps.

🗓️ When: Monday, September 14, 4-5:30 pm 📍 Where: Candelaria Student Lounge (CAND 0345)

All are welcome - students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends!

What are the DoGGS up to this summer? 🐾

Dr. Salo and spent the week in Rocky Mountain National Park conducting fieldwork for a project mapping historic agricultural ditches. Along the way, they spotted plenty of wildlife, heard wolves, and found several ditches where their predictive model said they would be.

Nothing beats seeing GIS, history, and fieldwork come together in the field! 🌲🗺️🐺
