Dear Campus Community,

Over the past several weeks, we have been asked by many members of the internal and external community when we would begin allowing access to the outdoor public spaces on our Green Bay Campus. Campus leadership has been debating this for some time. We are often asked why are the trails and arboretum not open when Gov. Evers lifted restrictions on outdoor recreation areas. The arboretum trails are part of the campus, they are funded by student fees, grants and sponsorships and gifts. Different than a municipal, county or state park, the trails are not created for the purpose of public recreation. They are part of the University and serve the mission of providing educational and research opportunities for our students and faculty. Of course, during normal times the University is happy to have the public and the campus community use these trails for recreation, but these are not normal times.

A number of things will factor into our decisions to open these spaces. The top priority is the safety of our employees and visitors. That said, we are anxious to open our trails, natural areas and golf courses to the public. It is our intention to work toward opening these areas on July 1, but please be aware that our plans may have to be flexible based on conditions on July 1. Due to recent flooding and rain, large portions of our arboretum trails on the Green Bay Campus are in disrepair. Our staff is working as quickly as possible to prepare for the safe use of all of these areas in the coming weeks. We have many staff members on furlough due to COVID-19 and it is slowing our normal progress to prepare the spaces. We are also closely monitoring the advice of local health experts on when and how to open.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward to opening these spaces as soon as we can do so in a manner that is safe to the public and our faculty, staff, and students.

Chancellor

On behalf of the University Staff Committee and the Professional Development Committee, we want you to know that we are sensitive to everyone’s situation, we are empathetic and compassionate for each of you, we are staying optimistic, and staying healthy -- mentally and physically. We don’t want to be separated from any of you during these unforeseen times.

Here is another ‘shout out’ to you, UW-Green Bay University Staff, a ‘team’ who will stick together like glue and get through this together!! Whether you are working on campus, working remotely, or furloughed we need to keep in touch. Unaware of your status, as a reminder if you are furloughed you should not be accessing your campus email.

Here’s a few things to keep you informed:
1. Be sure to ‘chime in’ to the Chancellor’s Coffee Break – next one is scheduled for May 15th.
2. See attached document: Adjusting Goals for University Staff on Performance Reviews

EPISODE 4
How has COVID-19 Changed Career Conversations? While career growth and development might not be on the top of your to-do list, conversations about the work we do, what we need to get it done and how to be effective employees are more important than ever. Being able to communicate your career needs to those around you—supervisors, staff, and coworkers—is an important skill, but reaching out can be scary. In this session led by UW career development staff Chris East and Elizabeth Schrimpf, learn about why these conversations are so critical now and get some best practices on initiating the conversations you need to have about your work.
4. Do you have a favorite comfort food? Share the recipe on FB!
5. Check out webinars from ETF at: https://etf.wi.gov/webinar-catalog
6. Trivia: Last week: UWGB was founded in 1965. This week: Mike Alexander is our Chancellor. How many Chancellors has UWGB had?
7. Tell us what you are doing to stay positive?
8. Breathe, take a break, read a book, enjoy music…stay safe, wear a mask, practice social distancing!
9. Remember: , ,
10. Stay connected! Check for COVID19 updates at https://www.uwgb.edu/coronavirus/
11. Remember to Like Us on Facebook at UW-Green Bay University Staff.
12. Follow us at www.uwgb.edu/university-staff-governance

By no means is this easy; it’s tough and challenging, but we will be like ‘glue’…sticking together, remaining positive, being helpful to each other, and optimistic during these unknown times.

Wishing all of you the best!

Together we will soar, rise, and win. GO PHOENIX!

POST 04/24/2020:
Hello University Staff Members:

With the breaking news of necessary furloughs at UW-Green Bay, the University Staff Committee wants to express our sincere concern for every University Staff member. Furlough decisions were decisions that the University did not want to make, and these decisions were not made lightly. They were made to ensure that the University remains solvent so that we can all return to normal in the long run. The University has been and will continue to be transparent as they can while making these, and any other, decisions during this time. For those impacted now, we feel your pain, and are here to help in any way we can.

First of all, we strongly encourage you to attend the Spring 2020 University Coffee Break at 8:30am on Friday, May 1, 2020 to interact directly with University Leadership. Bring your questions, and listen to hear future leadership plans and ideas.

Secondly, we have compiled some information that may help you find answers to questions you have on the impacts of being furloughed. As more information becomes available, the USC will keep you updated!

• UW System has provided a very extensive FAQ that can answer questions about impacts on benefits, retirement, etc.
• Continued Benefits – a furloughed employee will be eligible to retain University health insurance while furloughed. A furloughed employee may pay the employee share of health insurance premiums through direct bill or use of sick leave conversion credits. An employee who chooses to convert accrued sick leave to pay for State Group Health insurance while on furlough should be aware of the potential significant outcomes and steps needed to implement this option. Please review the resources below to determine if converting sick leave is right for you.

We value every UW-Green Bay employee. We express our extreme gratitude for all of your expertise and dedication that you have given to our University community.

Sincerely,

Your University Staff Committee,

Friday, February 1 will be my last day at UW-Green Bay before retirement. It has been my honor to serve as Chair of the University Staff Committee since we became a shared governance group, and to serve in various other capacities over the years when we were the Classified Staff Advisory Council (among other names). Thank you all so much for your friendship and support over my combined 32.5 years at UW-Green Bay. It has truly been a pleasure to call you my colleagues, and I wish you all the best. I will miss you!

Many thanks to all who attended the 2019 Annual University Staff Assembly on Tuesday, whether in person or remotely. We hope you came away with helpful information, as well as inspiration to get (or stay) involved in university staff governance. The revised bylaws were approved at the assembly and will become effective July 1, 2019. Many thanks to all who served on the Bylaws Restructuring Committee. University staff are the people who make things happen!
