About 70 percent of students at our University are involved in Fraternity and Sorority life. There are currently twenty-three Greek-lettered organizations on DePauw’s campus, belonging to one of the four governing councils. Each organization arranges different events throughout the academic year to support their unique philanthropies. New member recruitment happens in the Spring semester, after first-year students have had the opportunity to experience campus life. We also have two Greek honor societies, the National Greek Honor Society and the Order of Omega.

While Greek life is a big part of the social scene at DePauw, most of the events organized by these organizations are open to independent students as well. There is no need to be a part of a sorority or fraternity in order to get involved on campus - Greek life just offers another opportunity for interested students to experience community and philanthropy in a different way.

From their first year at DePauw, every student is encouraged to partner with faculty and peers to put ideas and theory into practice. Not only is there a plethora of science laboratories available for students to work in; the humanities and social sciences departments also offer research opportunities for curious and dedicated students. Because DePauw does not offer a graduate program, students do not have to wait behind Ph.D. candidates to have access to these opportunities - all they have to do is talk to the professor with whom they wish to collaborate. Students benefit from research in a variety of ways - it offers a way to apply concepts learned in a classroom setting in practice and develop a deeper understanding, it enriches students’ resumes, it helps develop independence and out-of-the-box thinking, and it allows students to explore potential career interests.

There are many options for good food around DePauw’s campus! Here are just some of my favorite picks:

Breadworks - the newly opened bakery is the perfect place to grab a quick breakfast and coffee before heading to class. In addition, the upstairs features a dine-in restaurant with a rotating menu (they are currently serving excellent sushi). You can check out their page here: https://breadworksbybridges.com/

Marvins - close to campus and open till 2am, this restaurant is favored among students wanting a late night snack! Check out their menu at https://zmenu.com/marvins-greencastle-online-menu/. P.S. - the GCB is a must try!

Bridges - wondering where to take your parents when they visit campus? The Bridges Craft Pizza & Wine Bar is a great option (https://bridgeswinebar.com/). The truffle popcorn is to die for!

Almost Home - as the name suggests, this restaurant is perfect when you start missing your mom’s home cooked food. Check out their unique and amazing menu at https://www.almosthomerestaurant.com/.

When filling out your First-Year housing application, you will be asked about preferences to live in a specific community. Depauw offers two different options - Healthy Living and the Rainbow Community.

Students living in the Healthy Living Community commit to a lifestyle that refrains from the use of alcohol, to***co and other drugs within their residential environment. In addition, this community offers additional programs and events that support healthy life choices, provide for a quiet environment conducive to studying, create interpersonal connections, and give students the responsibility to help set the standard for the community.

The Rainbow Community allows LGBTQA+ students and their advocates to find connections and live in a respectful space. The restrooms in this community are gender inclusive. All residents and their guests are expected to be respectful and sensitive to all identities within this community.

Meet Meru! Meru is a senior at DePauw. She’s the daughter of Indian immigrants and grew up in Mexico City. She’s majoring in Conflict Studies with a double minor in Gender Studies and Film Studies. She joined the Media Fellows Program because she is interested in learning how media plays a role in social justice!
