Some members of Prof. Wilkerson's GEOS 195: Energy, Environment, & Climate class visited the Merom Generating Station in Sullivan, IN on Wednesday, April 22. Our hosts provided us with an excellent tour of their facilities and presentations on energy generation (particularly for coal-burning power plants). We came away impressed by the magnitude of what is involved in generating electricity, and particularly the scale of what Hallador Energy does on the plant acreage in terms of not only generating electricity, but in the efforts to do so in an environmentally responsible way. It was an awesome learning experience for everyone and great opportunity to make connections between DePauw University and a local energy company in Indiana. Thank you, Hallador Energy!

The Utah Geological Survey is currently seeking to fill a Geologic Mapper position. If you have a strong background in field mapping structural geology, and stratigraphy, we would love for you to apply.

This position primarily focuses on the Basin and Range province of western Utah, which serves as a world-class natural laboratory for tectonicists. Your mapping will dive deep into the complex history of Cordilleran orogenesis overprinted by Basin and Range extension. You will deal directly with Sevier-age fold-and-thrust belt structures, complex Paleozoic to Cenozoic stratigraphy, exhumed metamorphic core complexes, and spectacular normal fault systems. While the focus is heavily structural and stratigraphic, you will also map the active neotectonics, surface processes, and geomorphology of the region—including the legacy of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville.

Though your primary mapping territory will be the Basin and Range, this is a highly collaborative role. You will frequently team up with other UGS mappers to assist on a variety of different projects and diverse tectonic terrains across the state.

Beyond the exceptional geology, Salt Lake City is an incredible home base. Utah is a world-class geologic destination, and living in SLC provides unparalleled access to the outdoors. The Wasatch Mountains are literally in your backyard, offering premier skiing, mountain biking, and trail running just minutes from the office. The city itself boasts a vibrant community of outdoor enthusiasts, a great food and local brewery scene, and the Salt Lake City International Airport (a major hub) is only 15 minutes from downtown—making travel for research, conferences, or off-duty adventures incredibly easy.

Please note: Applicants generally must be legally authorized to work in the United States (e.g., U.S. citizens or permanent residents).

If you have any questions about the position, the UGS, or the day-to-day work, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

Best regards,
